Tony Finau denies LIV rumors, and Jon Rahm is suspended right away
Tony Finau confirmed his future on the PGA Tour on Monday.
In the latest round of golf, Tony Finau plans to play on the PGA Tour in 2024. And Jon Rahm is not like that.
And it moves “in a circle”. When Rahm announced Thursday that he was leaving the PGA Tour for LIV, golf fans immediately wondered who would follow. Some of the biggest rumors immediately surrounded Finau, Rahm’s close friend and frequent sparring partner back home in Arizona. The Telegraph was among those who reported that Finau was in talks to join Rahm’s team. Since then there has been a lot of talk on social media. Finau Rahm showed his support while competing at the Grant Thornton Invitational this weekend.
“Yeah, I think he made the best decision that he thought was right for his family and for himself,” Finau told Sports Illustrated on Friday. “I’m happy for him.”
And what about his future? Finau did not take a difficult position. “No, not yet. There’s nothing to play with but the pickle,” he told SI. His team had a similar story to GOLF. It’s just a guess.
But before going to LIV, it was common not to give up. Finau’s “no comment” speech was seen through the lens provided to us by Cameron Smith, who said “no comment” for about a month before leaving for LIV last fall.
That was not the case for Finau, who put an end to the LIV rumors on Instagram on Monday afternoon and announced his intention to join the PGA Tour in 2024. “As the year draws to a close, I am grateful to have the opportunity to play the game I love and compete at a high level,” Finau wrote in his year-end reflection post.

Jon Rahm has been officially suspended by the PGA Tour in a memo sent to players by tour administrators. The grade was first reported by Q Info on Monday and later obtained by GOLF. The memo said FedEx Cup eligibility would be adjusted “based on Jon Rahm’s recent announcement.”
In accordance with PGA Tour rules, Jon Rahm has been suspended for participating in multiple unauthorized tournaments and has been informed that he is no longer eligible to compete in PGA Tour events.
This settled several questions about Rahm’s eligibility, such as whether he would be eligible to play on the PGA Tour before winning his first LIV event. It was also clear that Rahm’s suspension would force the players behind him further up the FedEx Cup points list.
This had dire consequences for the players below him on the FedEx Cup roster. Mackenzie Hughes ranks 50th in all 2024 autograph tickets. Alex Smalley moved up to 60th at the Genesis Invitational. Carl Yuan moved to 125 and let him keep the card. And Paul Haley moved up to 150th and was able to maintain his provisional status. Naturally, rumors of more players leaving for LIV grew. This means you will see your existing players improve. This means players considering a transfer could face an immediate ban.
Of course, there is still a chance that the two sides will reach an agreement. Especially after the PGA Tour’s policy committee announced it was moving forward with the investment group and seeking further dialogue with the PIF. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and PIF President (and LIV President) Yasir Al-Rumayian are scheduled to meet this week.
