For me, it’s a great honor to be chosen for my third Olympic games \ ‘ – Maguire
Cavan Golfer, Leona Maguire was chosen to represent Ireland at the Paris Olympic Games this summer.
It will be the third time Maguire, representing her country, and she is part of a familiar team for golf. Like the team that participated in Tokyo 2020, the Paris 2024 team made up of Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow will once again represent Ireland.
The golf tournament takes place at the Golf National, in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, near Versailles, southwest of Paris. The Golf National is considered one of the most beautiful golf sites in the world and belongs to the French Golf Federation. Among its two 18-hole courses, “L’Albatros” stands out as the most competitive and complex, and has hosted major international competitions, including the Ryder Cup in 2018. Irish golfers are some of the best in the world.
Last weekend, Leona Maguire became the first Irish player to win a Ladies European Tour event with a stunning eagle on the 18th hole in the Aramco Team Series. Maguire, who will be competing in her third Olympic Games alongside Antrim’s Stephanie Meadow, from Cavan, said: “It’s a great honour to be selected for my third Olympic Games. Not many people can say they’ve played in three Olympic Games. \ “When you can represent your country, it is always a great honor, and there is no great honor to play it in the Olympic game. Like golf, we are a member of the team. Is not very frequent, so it’s special to make it. “Steph and I have known each other for a long time and this is our third time together at the Olympics, and at this point it has been quite a journey over the past 20 years. It’s nice to see growth in each other’s games and lives, and it’s nice to be able to share that together.”
Ireland’s head of mission for Paris 2024, Enniskillen-based Gavin Noble, added: “Our golf team is very exciting and each player is capable of doing something big in Paris. This particular team has given us so much to celebrate in Tokyo and we look forward to working with Neil Manchip and the team to support them at Le Golf National.”
In Tokyo, McIlroy came agonizingly close to bronze, finishing fourth, and Lowry Offaly heads to Paris with podium ambitions: “My first experience in Tokyo was amazing and it feeds the hunger to do it again, come back and try better this time. A lot of what I have said and done this year has been about the Paris Olympics. I have always said that I want to bring a medal home for Ireland, that is my No. 1 goal. It’s also great to be back with Rory.”
Neil Manchip, Performance Director at Golf Ireland, said: “With just a few weeks to go until Paris, excitement is building. The Irish golf team is in great form and looking forward to the challenge that awaits us at the Golf National.
This brings the number of players officially selected to represent Ireland at Paris 2024 to 126. The Paris Olympic Games will take place from July 24 to August 11, with the opening ceremony taking place in July.
