Browns’ New $36 Million Player Could Miss the Remaindering Regular Season

Cleveland Browns coach Kevin Stefanski has dealt with several injuries this offseason, the most recent being safety Grant Delpit.
Grant Delpit just signed a contract extension with the Cleveland Browns, but the reliable safety could miss the rest of the regular season with a groin injury. Delpit officially signed a three-year, $36 million contract extension with the Browns on Monday. The club issued an official statement in this regard. “I’m excited to continue my career in Cleveland,” Delpit said. “From the day I enlisted, the city has shown me nothing but love. I can’t say enough good things about Haslam, [Andrew Berry], all my coaches and teammates, everyone and the environment since I’ve been here. I look forward to continuing this winning culture and showing the city of Cleveland the love it has for me. “It’s unfortunate that the injury happened yesterday, but I will do my best to come back as soon as possible and help the team win,” he said.
Delpit is forced to cancel the celebration. He left Sunday’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars with a groin injury and is “on injured reserve,” according to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot. If Delpit goes on IR, he will miss at least 4 games. That’s the rest of the regular season. “Obviously the Browns hope to get Delpit back for this big home game, but he’s on injured reserve and will miss the last four games,” Cabot said.
Delpit, a 2020 second-round pick, leads the Browns with 83 tackles and added seven tackles for loss. He played a key role in Cleveland’s defensive rotation. He will be missed if he is sidelined for any length of time. “I’m excited to continue my career in Cleveland,” Delpit said. “From the day I was drafted, the city has shown me nothing but love. I can’t say enough good things about the Haslams, AB, all my coaches and teammates, everyone and the environment since I’ve been here. I look forward to continuing this winning culture and showing the city of Cleveland the love it has for me. “It’s unfortunate that the injury happened (on Sunday), but we’ll do our best to come back as soon as possible and help the team win.”
The Browns have yet to make a final decision on Delpit on IR. According to head coach Kevin Stefanski, the team is still waiting for more information. “He’s still dealing with this injury and trying to manage it,” Stefanski said of Delpit.
The Browns are dealing with injuries all over the field.
The Browns haven’t had much luck on the injury front this season, most recently with Delpit’s injury. The secondary is already without Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward and veteran safety Juan Torhill, who is nursing a calf injury.
But in Cleveland, nobody makes excuses. At 8-5, the Browns still lead the playoffs.
“We’re not going anywhere, we’re not going anywhere,” Browns star Myles Garrett said Sunday, Dec. 10. “We never give up on anyone who fights, either individually or as a team. “We’re all pointing in the same direction and eyeing the prize.”
The Browns are on the road to face the Chicago Bears this week. Chicago has underachieved this season, but is on a two-game winning streak.
