Padres Poach Intriguing Right-Hander From Red Sox Amid Offseason Turnover
The Red Sox now need to add another arm to their thin pitching staff.
A major focus for the Boston Red Sox this winter is strengthening the pitching staff from top to bottom.
Boston now has another board seat as the San Diego Padres bring in another former Red Sox member, but this new addition isn’t as significant as the acquisitions of Xander Bogaerts or Michael Wacha last season.
“Red Sox roster bites: Right-hander Logan Gillaspie claimed off waivers from Padres,” MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported Wednesday. “The list of 40 people is now 38 people.”
Gillaspie appeared in 11 games for the Baltimore Orioles last season, posting an 8-5 hitting rate, a .350 batting average and a 6.00 ERA in 9 innings.
Boston claimed the 26-year-old off waivers on Sept.
4, but he never came to Boston.
He pitched an impressive four games for the Worcester Red Sox, pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings.
Gillaspie posted a 4.20 ERA in 40.2 innings at Triple-A in 2023.
Those numbers are in line with his Major League career, which has seen him post a 4.10 ERA in 26 1/2 innings since his debut in 2022.
Losing Gillaspie won’t make the Red Sox hit the panic button. Because it’s an arm deep. Boston will have plenty of time to find its feet.
