Former Red Sox pitcher Jeff Plympton battling polycystic kidney disease, needs donor
Boston – A former Boston Red Sox pitcher is looking for a kidney donor.
Jeff Plimpton played eight years in the Red Sox organization for the Red Sox and Paw Sox. Now he is asking his fans for help in finding a kidney donor.
In 2009, he learned he had polycystic ovary syndrome and would eventually need a transplant.
According to Plimpton, this diagnosis is not surprising. The disease is hereditary and can be passed on to other family members, including his mother.
“He went on dialysis for a year and was put on the kidney transplant list when the new hospital in Rhode Island opened and he was given the opportunity to receive a kidney in 1996,” he said “His life changed.
“I learned a lot from my mom, she never slowed down.”
He also hopes his diagnosis won’t hinder his work as recreation director for the city of Wrentham.
Plimpton hopes that sharing his story will help raise awareness of organ donation, not only for himself, but for others as well.
