$118 Million QB Advised to Seek Release, Join Browns
On November 20, the Cleveland Browns added Joe Flacco to their QB room as the best of their limited options. However, there is still a chance that the team will sign a better suitable player.
During his appearance on the November 20 episode of FanDuel’s “Up & Adams” program, former offensive tackle Taylor Lewan of the Tennessee Titans recommended that quarterback Ryan Tannehill request his release from the team in order to pursue a new chance in Cleveland.
Lewan stated, “The Browns would be the best place for him.” They have tools, a strong running game, and a comparable offensive scheme. Thus, I believe that would be a perfect match for him.
Ryan Tannehill May Be Able to Facilitate Exit From Titans
Tannehill’s starting position in Nashville was eventually lost to a high ankle sprain he sustained earlier in the season. Since October 29, when rookie Will Levis scored four touchdowns against the Atlanta Falcons, Tannehill has been used as a reserve.
The Titans are in last place in the AFC South with a record of 3-7. Tannehill, who is 35 years old, is probably keen in participating in important games this season as well as playing at some point in the season’s final stretch.
The NFL’s deadline of October 31 for such moves has passed, meaning that Tennessee is no longer able to trade the quarterback. In March, Tannehill, who is now in the last year of a four-year, $118 million contract, will become a free agency. Now, the
Browns Still Face Major Questions at QB Down Stretch Run
Tannehill would probably be better off going to Cleveland than any other place in the NFL. After a successful shoulder surgery on Tuesday, Deshaun Watson will miss the rest of the season, but the organization anticipates a healthy return in 2024.
In Week 11, the Browns offense was taken over by rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson, who helped the team defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers 13-10. During an eight-play, 48-yard drive, Thompson-Robinson completed 4-of-4 passes, setting up kicker Dustin Hopkins for the game-winning field goal.
Except for that drive, though, Thompson-Robinson was as inexperienced as a quarterback starting his second game in the NFL could possibly be. He completed the contest with 165 yards and an interception on 24 of 43 passes. The only other game the rookie started was in Week 4 — a blowout home loss to the Baltimore Ravens, in which he threw 3 interceptions.
After that performance, PJ Walker overtook Thompson-Robinson, but he was not as productive even though Cleveland won two of the three games in which he played most of the plays. Once the Browns learned last week that Watson had suffered a season-ending injury, they downgraded Walker and went back to Thompson-Robinson.
Although Flacco is 38 years old and hasn’t led the Ravens to a winning regular-season record since 2017, when they ended 9-7, he was the MVP of the 2017 Super Bowl. The last three seasons, Flacco was a backup for the New York Jets. During that time, he started nine games and finished with a 1-8 record.
In the event that Thompson-Robinson struggles more, regresses, or has an injury, Flacco is likely to see action in real time. Should he also fail, for whatever reason, the Browns may start looking at alternative options like Tannehill, assuming he can get out of his contract in Tennessee.
