Phil Mickelson spreading brazen Jon Rahm claim ahead of LIV Golf switch
According to reports, Jon Rahm has reportedly started talks with LIV Golf about making a possible transfer. Phil Mickelson is also supporting this assertion.
After rumors circulated that the Masters champion had begun talks to join the breakaway circuit, Phil Mickelson is supposedly confirming that Jon Rahm is scheduled to join the LIV Golf setup.
Rahm was reportedly in talks to possibly join Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, according to Bunkered. A source claimed that although an impending move was “way off the mark,” the Spaniard is “closer to joining than he has been before.”
Since its founding in June of last year, LIV has been able to draw in a wide array of the top names on the PGA Tour, including; Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, and Dustin Johnson, and it appears current Masters champion Rahm is next on their list.
Following Rahm’s most recent LIV connections, Alan Shipnuck of Fire Pit Collective gave an update, saying that Mickelson, about whom he wrote a biography, has been blatantly telling those close to him that Rahm’s possible transfer to the Saudi-funded series is a “done deal.”
Rahm has stayed mostly impartial in the heated conflict between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, but many people would be shocked if he joined the breakaway league given his previous remarks. The Spaniard acknowledged in August that he “laughed” everytime he saw Greg Norman and company being linked to a deal.
“I laugh when people rumor me with LIV Golf,” he said in an August interview with the Golf Sin Etiquetas podcast. I was never a fan of the format. Despite their difference in tours, Rahm and Mickelson are said to share a strong relationship, reuniting at this year’s Masters for a practice round, days before the Spaniard won his first green jacket.
Rahm also downplayed his likelihood of signing with LIV last summer, acknowledging that Mickelson had informed him that switching to the breakaway circuit would not be beneficial for him. “I always have a good time with Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia in the practice rounds of majors,” he stated.
“I respect Phil [Mickelson’s] choice, and he respects mine. Mickelson has repeatedly informed me that there is no reason for me to travel to play for LIV. LIV Golf is presently in the midst of its inaugural offseason transfer window, needing to add nine players to complete their 48-man roster.
The return of Andy Ogletree, who won the International Series to reclaim his LIV spot, will take one of those. The question is how many spots are available? There’s a lot more players that want to come than there are spots.”
