NEW DEAL: McLaren agree extension to use Mercedes power until 2030
McLaren have opted for continuity and stability by extending their deal to run Mercedes power units until 2030.
The British team had an agreement that stretched through 2025 and has been using Mercedes power since 2021. Previously, they did so from 1995 to 2014.
Nonetheless, McLaren and Mercedes have acted swiftly to finalize a contract since new power unit regulations—which will place a greater emphasis on electrical power—are set to take effect in 2026.
McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown stated, “Mercedes-Benz has been a brilliant and reliable partner of the McLaren Formula 1 team.” “The extension shows our team’s and our shareholders’ faith in their powertrains and the path we’re taking them in as we enter the next phase of regulations.
“We look forward to the success to come as we continue our path to battle consistently at the front of the grid. Together, we have been successful in the last three seasons as well as when they powered the team previously.”
Following three seasons of Renault power after a failed association with Honda, McLaren returned to Mercedes and went on to win the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, which is the most recent victory for any customer team in Formula One history.
In that time, they have also achieved 15 podium finishes, as well as a pole and a victory in the F1 Sprint in Qatar earlier this year, as well as an F1 Sprint in Brazil and they have emerged as the second-fastest team on pure pace behind Red Bull in the second half of this season.
According to McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella, “We are happy to confirm a long-term renewal of our power unit deal with Mercedes-Benz into the new era of regulations.” “We have enormous faith in Mercedes and our association with them.
“They have helped us get back to the top of the grid thus far, and their stability and security are essential to keeping us going in the right direction. We appreciate their cooperation thus far and look forward to working with them in the future.
Therefore, McLaren and the eight-time world champion works team become Mercedes’ first customers for the new 2026 regulations. The Silver Arrows are eager to continue working with excellent client teams as they want to become the class-leading power unit in F1.
Working with great customer teams has been a cornerstone of Mercedes’ motorsport strategy, according to CEO Toto Wolff. “There are numerous benefits to this. It provides a distinct competitive standard, quickens our technological learning curve, and fortifies Mercedes-Benz’s overall F1 business case.
Since 2021, McLaren has been a fair and fierce rival, particularly in the second half of this season. If we want to see ten teams who are competitive for podium results, it is critical that all customer teams in the sport have an equitable and transparent supply, as demonstrated by McLaren’s outstanding performances.
