The Browns Add Two Players To The Active Roster Before Taking On The Rams
Joe Flacco, the Browns’ fourth starting quarterback this season, was one of two players promoted from the practice squad on Saturday as the injuries at crucial positions continue to mount.
Moving forward, the Browns’ roster acrobatics continue an essential Week 13 encounter against the Rams.
Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco of Cleveland was promoted to the active roster on Saturday. While rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson is still undergoing the league’s concussion protocol, Flacco will start under center for the Los Angeles Chargers, as head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed on Friday.
After learning that starting quarterback Deshaun Watson will miss the whole season due to a glenoid fracture in his throwing shoulder, Flacco joined the Browns practice squad a little less than two weeks ago.
Cleveland can promote a player from the practice squad for up to three game days before having to add him to the active roster, according to the regulations governing the squad.
It remains unclear whether the Browns will use that leverage in the upcoming weeks or if they will sign the former quarterback of the Ravens, Broncos, and Jets directly to the active roster following this weekend’s contest.
For Flacco, this will be his 181st career start and his first since he was a player for New York in Week 18 of last year. The 15-year veteran participated in four games in 2022, starting five of them. He completed his pass play with 1,051 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions.
The Browns added cornerback A.J. Green to the active roster in addition to Flacco.
Following the announcement by the team that Denzel Ward, the cornerback on lockdown, would miss a second straight week due to a shoulder injury, that action was taken.
For Cleveland this season, Green has played in two games. In those two games, he largely played on special teams and has only recorded one tackle thus far in the 2023 campaign.
