Dave Dombrowski is excited to see his former manager Jim Leyland go to Cooperstown next year.
Dave Dombrowski, president of baseball operations for the Philadelphia Phillies, has a reason to visit Cooperstown, New York. For next year’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony. With the appointment of Jim Leyland on Sunday, Dombrowski’s former manager will be working with two different teams in July.
“I am very happy for him. It’s deserving,” Dombrowski told the New York Post on Sunday in Nashville during baseball’s winter meetings”
Leyland was the only finalist to receive 75% of the votes required to qualify for election to the Modern Baseball Era Committee for managers, umpires and officials who have contributed to the game. Other finalists were former managers Cito Gaston, Davey Johnson and Lou Piniella. umpires Ed Montague and Joe West; and directors Hank Peters and Bill White.
Leyland started with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986 and played 22 seasons. He also managed the Florida Marlins, Colorado Rockies and Detroit Tigers. He wrote from 1769-1728. Dombrowski and Leyland date back to the 1980s, when Dombrowski was the White Sox’s assistant general manager and Leyland was the third base coach.
Dombrowski hired Leyland as Florida’s manager in 1997, leading the Marlins to their first World Series title. The Marlins fired the team after the season and Leyland left the team after the 1998 season.
Dombrowski has not worked at Florida State since the 2001 season. Dombrowski hired Leyland back to Detroit in 2006, and Leyland led the Tigers to two World Series appearances. Leyland remained with the Tigers through the 2013 season, while Dombrowski left the Tigers in 2015 to join the Boston Red Sox.
