Victor Dubuisson, a former Ryder Cup winner, has declared his retirement.
In an interview with the French sports daily L’Equipe, the Frenchman—who played for the winning European team in the 2014 biennial tournament at Gleneagles—announced that, after 13 years as a professional, he was leaving the game.
“It’s life, for me it’s not an end,” he remarked. Considering that I started from nothing, I’m rather happy with my accomplishments. I still picture myself as a young child, complete with Decathlon clubs and a tiny knapsack. I was not at all predestined for this line of work.”
In addition to winning the Ryder Cup, where he gave Paul McGinley’s team 2.5 points from his three matches, Dubuisson placed in the top 10 in the PGA Championship and The Open that same year. In the year following his Ryder Cup performance, he rose to a career-high World No. 15, having won twice on the DP World Tour in 2013 and 2015.
The mercurial talent’s recent years have not been as prosperous, and despite his immense potential, he has already dropped to 1,035th place in the world rankings. This decline has not been helped by three withdrawals and an equal number of missed cuts from his eight DP World Tour outings this year.
Dubuisson was tipped to make an appearance at the LIV Golf Promotions qualifying later this week at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, in an attempt to try and restart his career. The top three will receive cards to the lucrative circuit from that event. But earlier in the week, he pulled out along with Chase Koepka.
Dubuisson maintained he was content with his career despite his recent downturn in fortunes. “Many will argue that I could have accomplished more and held the top spot in the world,” he stated.
“But I couldn’t be happier with it. I don’t always live with regrets. I can tell you that I am really delighted when I look behind me, at where I started, and at where I am now.”
