Jacques Villeneuve revealsbLewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen approached Red Bull to take his place.
Jacques Villeneuve has revealed that Lewis Hamilton has approached Red Bull to take his place alongside Max Verstappen.
Speaking about Lewis Hamilton’s approach at Red Bull for a seat alongside Max Verstappen, former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve believes it is normal for a driver to approach another team and then turn him down.
At the last race of the season, Red Bull team boss Christian Horner told the team that Hamilton was coming. Hamilton later claimed he had no contact with Red Bull and denied such conversations. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff also weighed in on the conversation and warned against Horner’s comments.
All talks were put on hold at the start of the season, with Red Bull bosses saying they had been contacted by Lewis Hamilton’s father. Speaking about the possibility of the British driver approaching Horner’s team, Villeneuve felt it would be natural for the seven-time champion to approach Red Bull. “What a burden! While you are under contract as a driver, you cannot communicate with other teams. But there is always a story.
Obviously you meet people on site or sometimes you use people who don’t work for you but still talk to you so you’re protected. However, if a sound comes out, you have to reject it. So who should check?”
Toto Wolff responds to claims Lewis Hamilton is closing in on Red Bull
Toto Wolff, head of the “Mercedes” team, reacted very harshly to Lewis Hamilton’s comments about his approach to Red Bull. Red Bull team leader Christian Horner announced this, and his observations on the nature of the relationship between the two team leaders were somewhat predictable. Wolff had a lot of nice things to say about Horner, so he explained what happened.
“I don’t know what motivates this man. We don’t understand how he creates these things. [Cristin was the one who asked for his availability. Lewis spoke to Christian. He spoke to me immediately. It’s not about the chair, it’s just… blah blah blah. “I wonder what’s going on there,” he said. Hamilton strongly denied any such attitude to himself or to those around him. The British driver has two more years with Mercedes.
