TRADE: A Gold Glove Cardinals outfielder who hit 34 home runs in 2021 is traded to the Red Sox.
The Red Sox have acquired outfielder Tyler O’Neill in a trade with the Cardinals, a source told Sports Base.
The 28 -year -old Right Carrier has the right to be a free agency since June 2024. MLB Trade Rumors projected him to make $5.5 million in his final year of salary arbitration.
Red Sox send right-handers Nick Robertson and Victor Santos to St. Louis. Boston acquired Robertson in the Quique Hernandez trade with the Dodgers on July 25.
O’Neal won two Gold Gloves in 2021, hitting .286 with a .352 on-base percentage, .560 slugging percentage, .912 OPS, 34 home runs, 26 doubles and finishing eighth in MVP voting NL 2021. In 138 games (537 at bats), he had two triples, 89 runs, 80 RBI, 15 stolen bases, 38 walks and 168 strikeouts. The 2021 season is the only year in which he played in more than 96 games. Since 2018, he has been on the injured list 12 times. He appeared in 72 games for St. Louis in 2023, hitting .231/.312/.403/.715 with 9 home runs, 14 doubles, 27 runs scored and 21 RBI (266 at bats). He spent 60 days on IL with back pain and 10 days on the disabled list with a sprained right foot. In his big league career, O’Neill played 324 games in left field, 36 games in left field, and 12 games in right field.
Robertson made his major league debut in 2023 before Boston acquired him from the Dodgers. He allowed 15 runs in 18 relief appearances over 22 1/3 innings (6.04 ERA) between Los Angeles and Boston.
Santos, a 23-year-old right-hander, has a 3.72 ERA in 101 minor league games (72 starts). He did not play in 2023.
