The $499 Kirkland Signature irons from Costco sold out in a matter of hours.

Costco, the big-box store, once again sparked a frenzy among gear enthusiasts on Saturday when they sold out of their highly anticipated Kirkland Signature players’ irons in a couple of hours.

The second of three new golf product releases from Costco is the Kirkland Signature irons. The first was a yellow Kirkland golf ball, which debuted in September. The third is an adjustable driver that hasn’t been released yet, but was spotted last month on the USGA conforming list.

How fast did the Kirkland Signature irons sell out?

The irons quietly appeared on Costco’s website the morning of December 9, like many of its products do. GOLF.com’s Fully Equipped Instagram account announced the irons’ availability, and shortly after, a number of other social media accounts spread the word. The irons were sold out in both of their available configurations (stiff or regular flex for right-handed users) before approximately 3 p.m. ET.

Using some basic math, which was made possible in part by an internal PowerPoint that was leaked and revealed that Costco had originally purchased $2 million worth of iron sets, which sold for $500 ($499 to be exact), it can be estimated that Costco sold about 4,000 sets in five hours. For teams without athlete endorsements or paid advertising, not too bad.

Kirkland Signature irons technology

The irons have an internal tungsten weighing system and a hollow, urethane-injected stainless steel body and face for increased forgiveness and playability, yet the full technical specifications are only offered in a single sentence on Costco’s website. Although it’s not stated, it’s conceivable that the face is composed of a stronger or lighter grade of stainless steel to aid with forgiveness or distance.

Many other irons in the player’s distance category, such as the TaylorMade P790 and PXG 0311 series irons, have a hollow foam/urethane-filled structure comparable to this one. The only distinction is that both firms use proprietary fabrication techniques.

Cost, features, and accessibility
Costco.com lists the irons for $499, but as of right now, they are sold out. Due to the increased demand and curiosity, some resellers have already started charging up to $1,099 on eBay for a set of the clubs, which were only available to members in two-order increments.

The clubs are gripped with Lamkin Crossline 360s, and the shafts in the set are True Temper Elevate MPH 115 in stiff and standard flex.

We anticipate that these irons won’t be a limited release, much like the Costco wedges and golf balls that came before them, and they may come back into stock shortly.
