Myles Garrett describes the officiating after the Cleveland Browns’ victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars as “a travesty.”
Never one to mince words, Garrett called out the Sunday team for the high number of missed calls, adding, “Somebody needs to hold them accountable.”
CLEVELAND – The Browns beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 31-27 on Sunday and everyone in Cleveland is happy.
Among them was star quarterback Myles Garrett, who praised the team’s “consistency” and “toughness.” However, this does not mean that he is satisfied with everything that happened. “The officiating today was stupid,” Garrett said, which could have resulted in him being fined by the NFL. “I was very scared.”
Garrett said the refs missed some calls they should have made against the Jaguars. It was all “tackles, possessions and false starts.” Although he ended the afternoon with plenty of pressure and a tackle for loss, he was confident his stats “could have been better” if things had been handled correctly. A striking Garrett told reporters, “This ‘Hack-a-Shaq’ nonsense has got to stop.” “You can’t let someone stick their finger in your face mask and push your head up or grab your collar from behind. … Both sides should be fair.”
Despite being one of the most dominant defenders in the league since his debut, pundits have long noted that offensive linemen tend to take a tough approach when blocking Garrett. The four-time All-Pro isn’t necessarily saying the officials have “nothing against him,” but right now he feels “close enough” and his anger at the situation has dissipated. It was “built” over time.
Miles Garrett will likely be fined for quoting “The police officer on duty today made a joke”.
The referee missed several calls that the Jaguars should have countered, including a face and hand grab. “Someone has to take responsibility for the calls they didn’t make.”
“If you watch the game and see what happened on the right flank, you will understand.” Garrett explained before mentioning the shoulder injury. “If you could see what my shoulder looks like now, you’d see it’s red and worn and looks like it’s been scratched by a wild cat or something.”
Even though Garrett was unable to catch an interception, the Browns were able to hold the Jags to 300 yards and get four sacks on quarterback Trevor Lawrence, none of which went to Garrett. The addition recorded three interceptions despite being without Pro Bowler Denzel Ward for the third straight week.
Still, Cleveland is 8-5 and in great position to make the playoffs, and Garrett has one thing to be happy about. But his looks don’t seem to stop him from calling out bad officials.
“I have a lot of respect for those guys, but we get scrutinized for the plays we don’t make,” he said of the referee. “So somebody has to hold them accountable for the plays or the calls they didn’t make and put them under the microscope like we do on every play.”
