Myles Garrett of the Browns is receiving the highest praise from NFL referees, who are treating him like Shaquille O’Neal.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The big man is tired of the hissing and scratching. He’s tired of the push and pull of going against the rules. And he’s tired of having the rules applied differently to him because he’s bigger and stronger than other players.
Myles Garrett called NFL officiating a “joke” during Cleveland’s 31-27 win over Jacksonville on Sunday. When Garrett played blocker for the Jaguars, he said the officials deviated from their rules against holding hands or using the face illegally. He said he allowed the quarterback to scratch Garrett’s shoulder like a wild cat. According to him, this violation of the rules went unchecked for a long time.
“We’re getting better and better (this season),” Garrett said. I don’t want to say… the officials are against me, but shoot, it’s closer. This Hack-a-Shaq nonsense has to stop.
“… This is nonsense. Do not allow anyone to put their fingers in the face mask, push your head up or grab the back of the collar. Otherwise, it will move out of position and pull you in front. We’re looking at all of that, but we’re trying to develop an attacking game. Both sides should be correct. I don’t care about that at all. Attack, defense – we have to have the same standards in many ways.”
