I Have Tight Instructions Not To Attend Public Events. – Jon Rahm on the media embargo until the start of LIV golf
After making the significant decision to join LIV Golf, Jon Rahm says he has chosen to take a step back and will not be doing any interviews until the league begins in February.
The Spaniard clarified that it was a self-imposed media lockdown, saying he was under “very strict instructions not to do public events” until the 2024 LIV Golf League begins in February.
Greg Norman Jr., son of LIV CEO Greg Norman, has acknowledged that his absence of media appearances is unrelated to LIV Golf.
“John wasn’t told to keep quiet by anyone at LIV,” Greg Norman Jr. wrote on X. “The translation utterly removed the meaning from it. Jon Rahm put himself through this so he could spend the holidays with his family. That is his decision.”
The 29-year-old expressed his amazement at the number of reporters present at his first public appearance since inking a contract reportedly worth up to $500 million while accepting an award in Bilbao, Spain.
The world of golf was shocked to learn that the Masters winner had joined Greg Norman’s Saudi-backed company. Rahm now wants to wait for some time for the dust to settle before doing any more interviews.
One man who is definitely not under a media blackout is Norman, the boss of LIV Golf, who claims that bringing in Rahm would have a “domino effect” because PGA Tour players have been “blowing up” his phone to join.
Present at the ceremony in his home Basque Country was the two-time Major champion, who was given the ‘Dama Bilbaina 2023’ honor for his golf careers thus far.
Rahm also declared that he wouldn’t be doing any more media work until LIV Golf began, even after his move stunned the golf world.
Rahm emphasized, “There will be nothing until February.” “I’m not allowed to.”
At his award ceremony, Rahm referred to himself as a “normal person” despite receiving media attention from both sports and news journalists following his significant move.
“I don’t consider that what I do is much different, and that I am more or less important than the rest,” Rahm stated.
“The only thing is that I’m seen on TV right now and that’s it… hopefully a little less so in the future.”
