Why the former left-handed pitcher from the Red Sox was not brought back
At the Nashville Winter Meetings, the Red Sox weren’t the busiest team, but they did make time to speak with one of their former pitchers.
Eduardo Rodriguez and the team he played for six MLB seasons together reunited last week, but Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports that “the Sox suggested they were focused elsewhere — (Yoshinobu) Yamamoto and others — and not prepared to bid at that time, but might circle back.”
This offseason, there were a lot of starting pitchers available, including Rodriguez. Shohei Ohtani, Seth Lugo, Sonny Gray, Aaron Nola, and Tyler Glasnow, who will join Ohtani in Los Angeles following the Dodgers’ trade with the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night, are among others who, like the southpaw, have found new homes.
The Red Sox still lack a necessary starting rotation addition. While the offseason is still early, Boston would benefit from signing a front-end starter as soon as can, especially since Ohtani and Glasnow are no longer available and the Royals outbid them for Lugo.
