Toto Wolff, the president of Mercedes, discusses the “sport vs. entertainment” controversy in Formula One. “Do we go beyond the sport, too much entertainment?”
Toto Wolff, the manager of the Mercedes team, feels that Formula One shouldn’t stray too far from sport and into entertainment.
As seen by all of the pre-event criticism from the just ended Las Vegas GP, the pinnacle of motorsport has been criticized of becoming too much of a show and less about the racing on track.
The Mercedes team principal discussed how the sport has been experimenting with various Sprint formats and adding more profitable events to the schedule in an interview with Bloomberg.
“Do we go beyond the sport, too much entertainment?” he questioned. No, I don’t believe that. With the sprint race weekends and the nighttime racing in Las Vegas, we’re experimenting with different forms.””
And I think we should give it a go if it has to be calibrated to give a better spectacle while adhering to our principles of the honest sport.
However, the main attraction of Formula 1 has always been the grand prix on Sunday, which must adhere to all legal, technical, and sporting requirements.
The head of the Mercedes squad outlines his goals for the group.
As Toto Wolff said it, he”Whoever is doing the best job wins, and if somebody is doing a much better job, then they win [21] races, and you can’t stop that.”
People will say, [before to the race]: ‘Well, I know the result.’ Ferrari, ourselves, and every other team will have to improve if we can’t compete with Red Bull.
We experienced that with Lewis many years ago; yet, you simply need to do better. I’d prefer not to hold off until 2026.
With any luck, Mercedes W15 will be strong enough on the track to help push Red Bull for the championship the next year.
