Justin Thomas and Will McGee on Sunday ahead of the PNC Championship

Thanks, Will McGee.

We’re sobbing now, too.

But what struck you as particularly poignant about Sunday’s PNC Championship? Was it the hand-in-hand walk McGee took his mother Annika Sorenstam, a Hall of Famer, on the 18th hole at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club? That was excellent. Will and Annika attended the major winners and their families event for the second year in a row, and the 12-year-old preferred the tournament over the desert. However, it was drawing to an end. And he had his head lowered. The fans applauded when Annika raised his hand, so sure, it was something.

But did you experience greater emotion after Will’s subsequent shot? That was also excellent. Something was about to happen, you knew.

It appears that the child has a knack for it. The lefty lofted one up from the right greenside bunker, dropping it just short of the cup and finishing about a foot away. Mom couldn’t compete with it. However, this place held more. With that, Will left the bunker. He removed his blue fedora. He gave it a wave. Father Mike McGee grinned, caddie for the team. Mom grinned. His father gave him a hug. Mom gave him a hug. I wanted to hug him, too.

But were you more struck by Will’s subsequent birdie putt? That was excellent as well. You were aware of the outcome. He set down his ball. He grasped his marker. The tears started to fall. However, he dismissed them with his right hand, pulled on the back of his cap, and threw the ball for a four. His father gave him a hug. He shook hands with the caddies and other players. He gave his mother a hug. He started crying once again. Oh my.

Or did the NBC live interview including Will and Annika suffice? following only one query posed by presenter Cara Banks? They switched on the lights for the cameras, and perhaps you melted.

“Will, I don’t know anyone that embraces the spirit of this championship more than you. Just your second year, you’ve been holing some huge putts, waving to the crowd. Just describe this experience for you this week.”

I think this is my finest week of the year.

“Being able to do it with her is so much fun.

“Thank you for everything, PNC.”

Oh, dude.

Mom came next.

“Tears are visible in your eyes. I am aware that it was a tearful stroll down 18. Annika, did it make you feel anything?

Yes, it is. It’s really enjoyable. Together, we have a great time. He obviously wanted to perform a bit better today, but I believe that we were just enjoying ourselves while walking, and I was moving very quickly on eighteen. “Move slowly, Mommy, I want to savor this moment,” he remarked. That seems to be what we did for the most of the week.

Those final handful of words crackled.

Those are happy tears, right, Will?”

“Oh, yes. Yes

Excellent, excellent. Because you’ll like what happened next. Let’s just say that out of a whole week of them, that was the cutest gesture.

Will was approached by Justin Thomas on the range prior to the round. Thomas felt the child needed assistance.

Then he assisted in putting golf balls in his pockets.

And why?

Navigate down to the 52-second mark:

Laugh. Weep. Both laugh and weep. Why not?

However, this discussion between Will and the reporters will mark our conclusion. It’s one more excellent one.

“Aside from your mother, who is your favorite professional this week?”

“This week, Tiger treated me pretty well. He is consistently very kind. However, I wasn’t anticipating it because he was so kind this week.

“I saw you chatting to him in the bunker. Did he tell you anything good?”

“We were just talking about stuff.”

“Did he give you any tips?”

“Just to have fun.”

“And you did?”

“Yeah.”
