NEWS GIST: Mike Tomlin gives Steelers rookie EDGE Nick Herbig ultimate compliment
Nick Herbig is without a doubt the most important member of the Pittsburgh Steelers 2023 rookie class. He has played a crucial part in keeping Alex Highsmith and T.J. Watt fresh so they can continue towreak havoc. During the process, he picked their brains when they came to the sidelines and learnt a lot.
Herbig has demonstrated what he has learned from his fellow outside linebackers, with one of his best plays coming in what NFL documentaries have labeled the “turning point” of Pittsburgh’s pivotal victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 17.
On Seattle’s second drive midway through the fourth quarter, Geno Smith dropped back and was greeted by a strip-sacking Herbig.
Sack. Fumble. Recovery.
The entire Steelers sideline burst into cheers, including Mike Tomlin, the head coach, who gave him the biggest complement.
Herbig is young there. I will have to start referring to him as Mr. Herbig. Bravo, Mr. Herbig,” Tomlin exclaimed.
In his news briefings, Tomlin frequently addresses special players as Mister So-and-so. He was handing it to one of his own people this time.
“Herbig, Herbig, Herbig.” During a sideline hug, he informed Nick’s older brother Nate, a reserve offensive lineman, “He’s growing up.”
A rookie seeing as much action as he has, particularly in the Steelers system, is unusual. However, you must do all in your power to protect talents like Watt and Highsmith, and Herbig’s quick transition from college to the pros allowed them to do just that.
Playing in all 17 games, he has 27 tackles (five for loss), two forced fumbles, three sacks, and three quarterback hits.
The biggest challenge of Herbig’s rookie season now stands before him: covering for NFL sack leader and Defensive Player of the Year contender Watt.
Herbig was made for this, but it will take an army to complete.
