Bill Belichick parted ways with the Patriots. “There have been rumors that the Cowboys are hiring Jerry Jones.”
If officially announced, it would end years of speculation regarding the legendary coach’s status with the Patriots.
Oh, and it would accelerate the long-standing speculation that he would end up in Dallas. Belichick has already cleverly used the media and his cronies around the league to drop breadcrumbs and signal to the NFL that he is worthy of being drafted.
And he will be, along with the Falcons and Chargers and certainly other teams.
Seven NFL teams are currently searching for new head coaches.
Some Cowboys observers believe, without much evidence, that eight of Belichick’s current teams are available and that Dallas coach Mike McCarthy is in the real or imagined hot seat.
Some people believe that there are.
Over the past 24 years, Belichick has amassed a record of 266 wins and 121 losses, won the Lombardi Trophy his sixth time, and has been named AP Coach of the Year three times.
.And, of course, he’s done it all with Tom Brady, but without Tom Brady New England is just 29-38 (including 4-13 last season). Is this an argument against Belichick as a coach? perhaps Could that be a factor if Belichick is rumored to be moving to Dallas? surely.
Suddenly there are “reports” that Belichick and Jerry Jones have become friends.If true, this is a fairly recent event. Now, there are reports that Jones has some kind of well-defined “performance ceiling” that the McCarthy-led Cowboys must meet in these playoffs.
Or Jones will be fired.
Regarding this, I can tell you that I am not thinking about McCarthy.
He thinks about how he can win against him. Asked about McCarthy’s job security, Jones said this week: “That’s not an issue.This does not preclude a response to implosion. What if the Cowboys lose 50-0 to the Packers at home on Sunday?
But I can also say this.
The only way for McCarthy to convince some critics that he’s safe and won’t be replaced by Belichick is for McCarthy to win a Super Bowl now. So to be honest?
The Monday after he did it? The critics’ track record suggests they will revisit the rumors and consider whether McCarthy will be fired if he doesn’t win two Super Bowls.
