Wild Proposed Cowboys Trade Swaps Brandin Cooks for $96 Million Star
The Dallas Cowboys have low approval ratings and the team may need to make a significant trade to get fans excited again. With Mike McCarthy back as head coach, frustration will continue to mount as the franchise has turned things around despite little playoff success. Bleacher Report’s RJ Ochoa has suggested Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs as a potential trade target this offseason.
The move pairs the playmaker with older brother Trevon Diggs as a blocking corner. “It’s hard to think about a trade [with the Cowboys missing a three-day draft pick],” Ochoa said during a live video session with Bleacher Report on Jan. 19, 2024. Buffalo Bills for Chef and Stefon Diggs. “Again, we’re making this ridiculous deal.
We’re just talking about random guesses. So they may need to bring in more assets that aren’t necessarily draft picks. Maybe they need to dip their toes into their 2025 assets as much as they’ve made the Cowboys uncomfortable in the past. Like when they traded Trey Lance last year.
Cowboy Rumors: Bills star Stefon Diggs is a huge upgrade over Brandin Cooks.
Diggs is a significant upgrade over Brandin Cooks, and Dallas still has some picks to make in order to make a deal. It also assumes the Bills are willing to move Diggs, something Buffalo has not done in the past. The combination of Diggs and CeeDee Lamb gives Dallas the most lethal one-two punch in the NFL. This move is not without its challenges. Diggs signed a four-year, $96 million contract through 2027. Lamb is scheduled to play with a fifth-year option in 2024 and is eligible for a new contract. If a new contract is not reached, the receiver could become a free agent in 2025.
Spotrac projects Lamb to sign a four-year contract with a market value of $115 million. A trade for Diggs would provide significant financial resources to the receiver position for the foreseeable future.
Cooks is projected to make $10 million in 2024, while Diggs will make $27.8 million next season. Diggs’ contract runs through the 2025 season, but would result in a $22.2 million cap hit if the team moves on.
Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs has reached 1,000 yards in six seasons.
If Dallas expects different results in January, the front office will need to make aggressive moves this offseason. Diggs had six consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.
The Bills star has 107 receptions for 1,183 yards and eight touchdowns while starting all 17 games this season. It was Diggs’ fourth straight 100-catch season.
“You need a shiny new toy, and that’s where the fan base is right now,” Ochoa said. “If your coaching staff doesn’t have toys, you need shiny toys. Obviously, this will not be your tutor. Maybe they could sign Derrick Henry in free agency. I do not know …and is there a shinier new toy than Stefon Diggs?
