JUST IN; Ex-Cowboys OT/DT Signs with 49ers in Free Agency
The former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman joined the San Francisco 49ers after spending nearly four years with the NFC East team. Isaac Alarcon was a rare draft for the Cowboys, but now he’s with the Niners. Although Alarcon did not take a regular season, he spent several years with the Cowboys as part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway program. On Jan. 23, the 49ers announced they had acquired the 25-year-old in a backup/futures trade. Cowboys fans may not be familiar with Alarcon due to his lack of regular season action. But Dallas spent more than three years developing a two-way player in Monterrey, Mexico. It is now heading to California to further develop. Obviously, Alarcon will not play in the playoffs due to his reserve/future contract and will face an uphill battle to make the roster in San Francisco. But the 49ers won’t take him if they don’t think he has the potential to continue to develop.
San Francisco is a tough place for Dallas.
While the Cowboys avoided the 49ers in the playoffs for the third straight year, the latest chapter in one of the NFL’s most iconic rivalries was a rough one for Dallas. The Niners beat the Cowboys 42-10 on October 8th. At the time, the fact that Dallas was on par with San Francisco raised serious concerns. Three months later, one team was eliminated in the NFC Championship and another in the NFC Wild Card round.
The fact that the Green Bay Packers beat Dallas and will face San Francisco in the divisional round only adds to their chances. The Cowboys could have been ranked first going into the game, but instead they were ranked low.
Olacon has not served as a coach, but will likely be the focus of attention for Dallas fans. San Francisco has maxed out their entire roster over the years, and if Alarcon does make it to the next level, it begs the question of why the Cowboys haven’t been able to do the same.
The Cowboys have signed several players to futures contracts.
With Alarcon headed west, the Cowboys also made moves on his backup/futures contract. According to Heavy’s Jonathan Adams, Dallas has 11 players signed through the 2024 offseason.
- RB Malik Davis
- RB Snoop Conner
- WR Martavis Bryant
- WR Jalen Moreno-Cropper
- WR Racey McMath
- T Earl Bostick
- CB Josh Butler
- TE Princeton Fant
- LB Buddy Johnson
- DE Durrell Johnson
- DB Sheldrick Redwine
Conner, a former fifth-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars, was a college star at Ole Miss. He played limited snaps for Jacksonville in 2022, rushing 12 times for 42 yards and a touchdown.
However, he was released in 2023 and joined the Jaguars’ practice squad. Although he did not play in the regular season last season, he will get another chance to impress in Dallas.
