Wild 3-Team Proposed Trade Sends Cowboys a New Award-Winning QB
The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott could end their long marriage with a contract extension soon. A contract has yet to be signed, and Prescott will soon enter the final season of a four-year, $160 million contract. K. D. USA Today’s Drummond walks us through a possible “alternate world” where Prescott and the Cowboys can’t reach a new contract. Would the Cowboys consider a trade if this scenario played out? Prescott’s contract includes a no-name and no-trade clause. That means the star quarterback must sign any deal.
Drummond believes the Chicago Bears could be one of the teams interested in a blockbuster trade for Prescott. Chicago could then use the no. 1 to another position or trade it to a team looking to land USC star Caleb Williams.
One pundit has proposed a wild three-team trade for the Cowboys that includes the Bears and New England Patriots. Finally, Dallas hit the reset button and gave Jaden Daniels the future of the team.
Here’s how the offer works: Cowboy rumors: Bears offer trades with three teams, including new Patriots QB network
New England moved up from Chicago to get the no. 1, while Dallas ended up with the no. 9. The deal gives the Cowboys the No. 1 pick. 9, a 2025 first-rounder (via the Patriots) and a 2025 third-rounder. The Bears scooped up Prescott with the next pick from the Patriots: the No. 3, the 2025 first-round pick and the 2024 third- and fourth-round picks. New England secured the no. 1. Dallas uses the no. 9 to select LSU’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback.
Even if Prescott could sign, the Bears might want a cheaper rookie if the team moves on from Justin Fields. Given Prescott’s lack of success in the postseason, selling the former Pro Bowler to Chicago’s front office will be difficult.
Can the Dallas Cowboys replace Dak Prescott? It’s confusing.
We’ve seen NFL teams move on from franchise quarterbacks via trade, but it’s rare. The Seattle Seahawks trading Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos in 2022 stands out as one of the most surprising NFL trades in recent memory. ESPN’s Todd Archer breaks down what the Cowboys need to do to move Prescott. Archer January 24, 2024 What will the Cowboys do with Dak Prescott’s contract? “Prescott’s contract says the Cowboys can’t franchise him until 2025,” the article reads. “He also has a no-holds-barred clause, but that means he can only be traded to a team with his approval.
Russell Wilson also had a no-holds-barred clause and was traded from the Seattle Seahawks to the Denver Broncos. Any such deal for Prescott would require a reworked contract to make him more palatable than the Cowboys expected, which facilitated the trade of Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets.” Archer continued.
“But a trade seems unlikely for a number of reasons. The Cowboys want to win big in 2024, and I think Prescott can help them get there. “But the Prescott issue is an issue for 2025 and beyond, not 2024.”
What will LSU QB Jayden Daniels look like in a cowboy uniform? He looks a lot like Ravens star Lamar Jackson.
Let’s live a little and imagine what the Cowboys could accomplish with Daniels under center. As evidenced by the Heisman trophy on his mantle, Daniels put up video game numbers with the Tigers. Daniels threw for 3,812 yards, 40 touchdowns and four interceptions in 2023, completing 72.2 percent of his passes. The star also had better stats than most running backs, including 135 carries for 1,134 yards and 10 TDs. Remember, sacks are the most of any player in college football. ESPN’s Matt Miller compares Daniels to soon-to-be two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson. Because of Daniels’ athleticism, Miller sees shades of a Baltimore Ravens quarterback in his game. “The Heisman Trophy winner is the most improved player in college football in 2023,” Miller said in a Dec. 26 article titled “2024 NFL trade: Outlook and rankings based on first-round performance.” “He started the season ranked No. 3 by NFL Scouts, but posted a 50-touchdown campaign (40 passing, 10 rushing) with just four interceptions.
“Daniels is not only the best pitcher in this draft with a vertical QBR of 99.6, but he’s also the most dangerous quarterback.”
Dak Prescott is about to sign a contract extension with Dallas.
It will be an interesting workout before a long season, but all signs point to Prescott signing a new contract in the coming months. Prescott’s current cap hit is $59.4 million through 2024, giving the Cowboys a sense of urgency to do something. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Dallas and Prescott are “on track” to reach a contract extension. “While coach Mike McCarthy is out of contract, QB Dak Prescott is still on track for a big contract extension,” Rapoport told X on Jan. 20.
