Timpson’s 10th double-double of her career helps the FSU women’s basketball team defeat Miami.

The roller coaster game between Florida State (16-7, 7-4 ACC) and Miami (14-7, 4-6) women’s basketball was led by FSU forward Makayla Timpson.

He recorded his 10th double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds against Donald L on Saturday. At the stadium, the Seminoles defeated the Hurricanes 75-68 in front of 2,227 fans. Tucker Civic Center.

“Playing against Miami is always exciting and awesome,” FSU coach Brooke Wyckoff said. “It’s always exciting to play in front of a big home crowd and get a win. I am proud of our many individual achievements. Especially as a team in the fourth quarter. “We settled down as a team and focused on both.”

Timpson has been one of the Seminoles’ most consistent producers this season. Her 10th double-double of the season ranks her 24th nationally and third in the ACC behind North Carolina’s Alyssa Ustby (11) and Pittsburgh’s Liatu King (12). He also recorded blocks on the day, finishing with 58, good for seventh in the nation and leading the ACC.

The fourth quarter play was a huge boost for FSU after recent losses to Syracuse, Virginia and Duke. The Seminoles defeated the Yellow Jackets 27-12 against Georgia Tech and held a 19-11 advantage against Miami.

For the Seminoles, the focus was less on winning and more on how to win. Focus on going back to what you know.

“We learned a lot from those losses, the players individually and collectively learned to get on board, do what we do and be ourselves again,” Wyckoff said. “It gave us a chance to win. We didn’t have to change anything or rewrite the script. We will be ourselves again.”

Building trust was important in getting FSU back on track. Several players and Timson walked out during the Miami performance. Guard Omaria Gordon scored 16 points for her 20th double-digit scoring game of the season and guard Tania Ratson finished with 15 points for her sixth double-digit scoring game of the season.

As a team, the Seminoles shot 45 percent (26-of-57) from the field and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the free throw line. Both Ratson and Timpson shot 100 percent from the free throw line.

“We were just trying to get our confidence back.” Gordon said. “We will do as the director said. We don’t do anything special. Everyone should do their own thing and not try to be someone else. “We can’t be ourselves if we try to be someone else.”

FSU had three players commit three or more fouls, while the Hurricanes had 16 to the Seminoles’ eight, putting Miami in trouble late. Four Miami players finished with 12 or more points, including Remia Hilton (15 points). “They (Miami) were a little loud, but it was always the same when we played Miami.” Gordon said. “It makes the game really fun and competitive. That’s all.\”

The Seminoles improved to 16-7 on the year and 7-4 in ACC play. They face Pittsburgh (7-15, 1-8) on the road Thursday at 7 p.m. The Panthers have lost three in a row and fell to No. 14 on the road at Notre Dame, 78-53 on Sunday.

“We want to stay the course,” Wyckoff said. “Every game gives us a new challenge on the ball – different teams, different styles, different defensive looks and we play in different gyms. Can other teams do what we do without letting us down?”

“It sounds simple and mundane, but if we keep doing this, we can become truly elite.”
