Exclusive: Two Georgia Bulldogs named among best players in Super Bowl history
Terrell Davis, a former running back for the Georgia Bulldogs, and Jake Scott, a defensive back, are two of the greatest players in Super Bowl history. According to USA TODAY’s Nate Davis, Davis is the ninth-best player in Super Bowl history.
In what was arguably the greatest Super Bowl effort by a tailback, he ran for 157 yards and a record-tying three TDs – while combating a migraine – on his way to Super Bowl 32 MVP honors as the Denver Broncos won their first title.
From 1992 to 1994, the former Georgia standout was a member of the Bulldogs. Two Super Bowls were won by Terrell Davis. In Super Bowl 33, he delivered yet another brilliant performance to cap off his stellar showing in Super Bowl 32.
Davis added 102 rushing yards and 50 more receiving when Denver repeated the next year.
Terrell Davis is the second-ranked running back on the list behind Dallas Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith.
Jake Scott, a former standout defensive back for the Miami Dolphins, was ranked as the 30th-best player in Super Bowl history. Scott was a two-time Super Bowl winner. The 1972 Miami Dolphins, the only team to win the Super Bowl without losing, selected him as their MVP.
His pair of interceptions, including the game-clincher, put a bow on the Dolphins’ perfect season and brought him Super Bowl 7’s MVP. Scott got another ring the following year, recovering a pair of Minnesota Vikings fumbles. He also handled kickoff and punt returns for Miami.
Scott finished his NFL career with 49 career interceptions.
Hines Ward, a former Georgia Bulldog and the MVP of Super Bowl 40, is left off the list. In his three Super Bowl appearances, Ward won two. The legendary player from the Pittsburgh Steelers recorded 14 receptions for 244 yards overall and two touchdowns over his three Super Bowl appearances. Having at least one former Bulldog in the Super Bowl for the past 23 years includes Ward.
