Exclusive on Browns; Deshaun Watson Endorses New Browns Offensive Coordinator Ken Dorsey
Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson offered support to his new offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey on the QB Unplugged podcast, which he co-hosts with quarterbacks coach Quincy Avery. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski will reorganize his offensive coaching staff this offseason as the team parted ways with Alex Van Pelt, who worked with Stefanski since 2020, and hired the former Bills defensive end; In particular, he made a few changes to his offensive coordinator.
Now, the key decision of who will be the starter has become increasingly important as Stefanski considers whether to keep that job or hand it over to Dorsey. At the very least, Dorsey is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the offense and help restore quarterback Deshaun Watson to the top-10 player he once was.
Late last week, Watson spoke about recruiting for the first time on the QB Unplugged podcast, which he co-hosts with personal trainer Quincy Avery, and shared his enthusiastic support for his new OC.
“I’m very excited.” Watson began speaking. “…To make sure he could go all the way to Carolina in his coaching career, I think he made a few stops in between before going to Buffalo. Games and divisional rounds were regularly big draws during the regular season while he was in Buffalo.
“I think he was Cam [Newton]’s quarterbacks coach when he won the MVP and took them to the Super Bowl. The last few years with Josh [Allen], everyone knows what Josh has done in Buffalo.” I think he was the second or third MVP twice.” Watson said he really wants to return to Berea in the coming months and work with Dorsey while he continues his rehabilitation from shoulder surgery in Los Angeles.
“I’m really excited to come to Cleveland and get the playbook and learn from him. I also listened to his press conference and it was great to hear him say he would make me one of the defenders again. That’s the key.” Getting Watson back to being the best QB in football is a top priority for Dorsey, the former Browns QB.
Now he’s back in the franchise in a completely different role, but Watson and Avery see great potential. “Oh, of course.” Watson said, laughing at Avery’s comment about Dorsey’s tendency to push the ball down the field. “He’s going to break it too. Hey, you can have a wide 5, you can have [Amari Cooper] at running back, you can have [Nick Chubb] at wide receiver. That’s it.
“I’m training in Los Angeles with two guys who played for Buffalo. As soon as they heard the news and asked about Ken, they said ‘very interesting’. “He wants to score a lot of runs, he wants to be the best player. He’s the best batsman in the league and he wants everyone to succeed.”
Watson and Avery continued to discuss their curiosity about how Dorsey and Stefanski will get together, which is something fans are just as eager to know. As the Browns move through the offseason and prepare to begin their offseason program in April, things will begin to take shape.
