Georgia Dawg Sweeps Weekend Series Against UNC Asheville
This weekend, the Diamond Dawgs hosted UNC Asheville in a three-game series to kick off the 2024 season. Wes Johnson is the program’s new head coach, and after leading Georgia to victory in the series finale on Sunday, he is off to a quick start with his new squad.
Georgia’s offensive prowess was on display the whole weekend, as they scored double digit runs in each of their three games. They opened the weekend with an 11-2 victory on Friday, then won the series with a 17-5 performance on Saturday and a shutout 10-0 victory on Sunday. The Bulldogs had a strong start thanks in part to the hot bats over the weekend.
Georgia produced a number of standouts throughout the weekend, most notably some excellent at-bat performances. Slate Alford, an infielder who transferred from Mississippi State, had a fantastic weekend, hitting three home runs, collecting six hits, and totaling nine RBIs in three games. Charlie Condon, who ended the weekend with seven hits, four runs scored, and three doubles, got in on the fun as well. With two home runs and eight RBIs in his last series stat line, outfielder Dylan Goldstein was also on fire. Charlie Goldstein, who began for Georgia on Friday and only gave up one run, one hit, and seven strikeouts in just four innings of work, was another Goldstein who had a fantastic outing.
Game One final: 11-2
Slate Alford: 2-for-5, 2 home runs, and 3 RBIs
Charlie Condon: 2-for-3, 2 walks
Dylan Goldstein: 1-for-1, 1 home run, and 2 RBIs
Game Two final: 17-5
Dylan Goldstein: 3-for-4, 1 home run, and 5 RBIs
Logan Jordan: 2-for-3, 2 home runs, and 2 RBIs
Fernando Gonzalez: 3-for-5, 1 home run, and 2 RBIs
Dillon Carter: 1-for-2, 1 home run, 1 RBI, and 3 walks
Slate Alford: 1-for-5, 1 home run, and 3 RBIs
Game Three final: 10-0
Slate Alford: 3-for-4, 3 RBIS, and 1 walk
Charlie Condon: 3-for-4, and 1 RBI
Leighton Finley: 4.0 IP, 1 hit, and 5 strikeouts
The Diamond Dawgs had an incredible start to the season, and if this weekend’s offensive display is any indication of what’s to come, Coach Johnson and his team should be able to compete with any team this year.
Georgia’s schedule for the upcoming week includes a single game trip to Georgia State on Tuesday, a return home series against Northern Kentucky over the weekend, and a series of single games against various out-of-conference opponents the following week.
