Exclusive; Charlie Woods is going to try to qualify for this PGA Tour event
Charlie Woods is aiming to qualify for his first PGA Tour competition, which will be conveniently located close by.
Tiger Woods’ 15-time major champion son is set to participate in the pre-qualifying round of the Cognizant Classic at The Palm Beaches, as confirmed by the PGA Tour. On Thursday, Lost Lake Golf Club in Hobe Sound will host this event which happens to be close to Jupiter where Woods resides with his family.
One of the four pre-qualifiers for the event features a younger Woods. Around 25 players, including ties, will progress to participate in Monday’s total qualifying tournament. The PGA Tour competition is scheduled from February 29th to March 3rd at Palm Beach Gardens’ Champ Course in which there are only four spots open for grabs.
Over the last four years, Charlie’s game has become well-known to golf enthusiasts as he joined Tiger at the PNC Championship. In addition, although only a freshman at Benjamin School, Charlie contributed significantly in leading his high school team to win a state title this past November.
It is noteworthy that despite turning 15 earlier this month, Charlie has never participated in an AJGA event or tried to qualify for a USGA championship. Although he has taken part in other junior golf tournaments such as the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship last fall, where he enlisted his father’s help and finished T-17 among Boys aged 14-15.
On Thursday, Charlie is scheduled to tee off at 7:39 a.m. ET with Ruaidhri McGee and Olin Browne Jr., who are also offspring of PGA Tour players.
Under new sponsorship, the Cognizant Classic (formerly known as Honda Classic) has attracted early commitments from golfers like Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler. While it remains uncertain whether Tiger Woods will participate in the competition, he may be influenced by Charlie’s performance this week.
