Exclusive; Browns Insider Sends 2-Word Message on Greg Newsome Trade

This offseason, Greg Newsome of the Browns may be considered as a possible trade option at cornerback.

Having already been part of trade speculations in the past, Cleveland Browns’ cornerback Greg Newsome could potentially be involved in additional ones during this offseason.

Entering his fourth season with the Browns, Newsome has accumulated a total of 39 starts and two interceptions after being selected in the first round.

The Browns have a decision to make in the upcoming offseason regarding Newsome’s fifth-year option, valued at slightly less than $13 million. Additionally, they could potentially trade him as an alternative. Will Cleveland choose to pursue a deal for Newsome during this time? Zac Jackson of The Athletic claims that it is unlikely.

Jackson, in fact, highlighted the justifications that could portray Newsome as a possible contender for trade.

Jackson expressed on February 19 that Newsome is a valuable player at a crucial position who was chosen in the first round under Berry’s guidance. However, considering Martin Emerson Jr.’s imminent eligibility for an extension and Denzel Ward already being compensated as one of the league’s top cornerbacks, it raises justifiable doubts about how long the Browns can retain what may be regarded as football’s most superior trio of cornerbacks.

The Browns have a significant amount of depth in their cornerback position.

One of the talented secondaries in Cleveland includes Browns cornerback Greg Newsome.

Despite having many talented players, including Newsome, the Browns may struggle to retain them all. Nevertheless, Emerson remains a more advantageous asset than Newsome and has made a greater impact in games played. Additionally, Denzel Ward – Cleveland’s premier cornerback – signed an extension worth $100 million in 2022 that will keep him with the team for another four years.

Ward ranks as the second-highest earner on the Browns defense, topped only by Myles Garrett who earns $25 million annually. However, a recurring challenge for Ward has been maintaining his presence in games; he participated in just 13 matches last year.

Cameron Mitchell, a fifth-round pick in 2023, is also part of the Browns’ roster. He had limited on-field experience and was sidelined due to a hamstring injury at times.

The role of Browns CB Greg Newsome was a source of complaint earlier.

Greg Newsome, the Browns’ cornerback, was discontented with his position in the past.

Newsome has been subject to trade rumors in the past due to his dissatisfaction with being primarily used as a slot cornerback under former defensive coordinator Joe Woods. Despite this, he ended last season feeling contented with his performance and spoke highly of current defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.

“We predominantly played man-to-man defense, which is where I feel most comfortable. Coach Schwartz deserves credit for putting me in advantageous positions to succeed this season by allowing me to be more involved with the football. He gave me opportunities on both the inside and outside of the field as well as chances to blitz and assist against runs when necessary. In my opinion, there’s no better defensive coach than Coach Schwartz at tailoring his approach based on players’ capabilities, leading him to do a fantastic job honing my skills throughout the year.” This statement was made by Newsome after the wrap-up of their latest season on January 14th.

Despite achieving career-highs in tackles, tackles for loss, pass breakups and interceptions – 49, 4, 14 and 2 respectively – Newsome encountered some challenges during his performance. One example is the tough game he had against the Houston Texans during postseason where he received a disappointing PFF grade of only-29.4.

Newsome stated that it is crucial to learn from experiences like this. He also mentioned that they will enter the next season with a determined mindset, as although their performance was satisfactory during this season, they did not perform well in the most significant game of all. Newsome believes that analyzing and taking away lessons from situations such as these will only serve to strengthen them for future challenges ahead.

Expressing his desire to remain with the Browns, Newsome envisions Cleveland as his future destination.
