REPORTS: Dell McGee, assistant coach at Georgia, is the top candidated to be hired as head coach at Georgia

Several reports indicate that Dell McGee, a former Auburn football player, is on the verge of becoming the head coach at Georgia State.

McGee, who is 50 years old, has served as the running backs coach at Georgia since 2016. During his tenure there, he played a significant role in helping the Bulldogs secure three SEC championships and two national championships . Furthermore, during his initial three seasons with UGA , McGee also held the position of assistant head coach until assuming additional responsibilities as run game coordinator in 2019.

Shawn Elliott resigned last week to join South Carolina as their tight ends coach, and in his stead would step McGee. However, the Panthers were already underway with spring practice during Elliott’s departure. The NCAA and Sun Belt Conference granted them special permission to halt workouts until a new coach was appointed so they could participate again at full strength for their spring game.

McGee hails from Columbus, Ga. and held the position of starting defensive back for Auburn throughout multiple years in the early 1990s. He is perhaps best known for obtaining an interception during the final quarter of the Iron Bowl game in 1993, ultimately contributing to a triumph over Alabama with a scoreline of 22-14 and allowing Tigers to complete their season undefeated at an impressive record of 11-0.

After playing for four seasons in the NFL and spending time with NFL Europe, XFL, and Arena Football League teams, McGee shifted gears to become a high school coach in his home state. He served as head coach at Columbus’ Carver High School for eight years before transitioning again to work as an analyst under Gus Malzahn at Auburn starting from 2013.

McGee joined Georgia Southern as their running backs coach in 2014 after aiding the Tigers to clinch an SEC championship and a BCS title game appearance. He took charge of the Eagles as interim head coach for the GoDaddy Bowl (2015) following Willie Fritz’s exit to Tulane, steering them towards victory with a score of 58-27 against Bowling Green.

Kirby Smart added McGee to the Georgia team in 2016 and he quickly established himself as one of the premier recruiters nationwide. His outstanding achievements were recognized when he was awarded National Recruiter of the Year by Rivals.com and 247 Sports in 2018.

In 2023, Georgia State achieved a record of 7-6 and won the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl against Utah State by an impressive score of 45-22. As their new coach, McGee will lead them into the upcoming season with their first match scheduled against Georgia Tech on August 31st, in what promises to be an exciting start for Panthers fans.
