An astonishing claim; PGA Tour told it has become ‘qualifier’ for LIV Golf in humiliating assessment
There has been ample discussion regarding the conflict between LIV Golf and PGA Tour, with a past major winner now asserting that the splinter league is gaining momentum as the stronger circuit.
Several noteworthy personalities have departed from the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf.
As per Paul Azinger, the ex-Team USA Ryder Cup skipper, the rising caliber of LIV Golf’s squad has prompted him to view PGA Tour as a “preliminary” contest for it.
Ever since its establishment in June 2022, LIV has managed to attract some of the biggest names in golf such as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and most recently Jon Rahm. The alluring financial benefits offered by this breakaway league have proven hard for many to resist which only serves to enhance the competitiveness of the league with each passing year.
Although most observers believe that the PGA Tour still holds its position as the leading professional golf circuit, Azinger, a 12-time tour winner, has expressed concerns regarding the division of top players between two circuits.
Golfweek was told by the speaker that not all top players are participating in PGA Tour events because it has become subordinate to LIV Tour. This shift marks a sorrowful time for golf and, as per his observation, he doesn’t feel like he’s missing out on much or anything at all by choosing not to watch.
Before being denied contract renewal in November, the 1993 PGA champion had been a familiar voice on NBC’s PGA Tour coverage. As of present, he has no plans to resume commentating on professional golf; nonetheless, he hesitated to completely dismiss the possibility of accepting a position with LIV.
He stated that while it’s not impossible, it is highly unlikely. He explained further by saying that he wouldn’t be foolish enough to outright say no and shut the door on opportunities but barring any unforeseen circumstances, he will not participate in the Tour. Azinger shares similar sentiments with other golfers caught up in golf’s internal conflict – they all hope for a reunion of top players who have been separated due to various factors for almost two years now.
The PGA Tour-LIV Golf saga received commentary from Paul Azinger.
Currently, negotiations are underway between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) regarding a possible collaboration with LIV that would bring back top players. Among those who chose to switch to competition in Saudi Arabia is former U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau.
The American golfer is eager to resume competing with his PGA Tour peers as soon as possible. DeChambeau expressed hope for a future where both entities see sustained growth and eventually reunite, stating: “It needs to happen.” These comments were made by the athlete during LIV Mayakoba last month.
I wish people could set aside their arms and peacefully negotiate to resolve issues, as it would be favorable for the sport of golf and fans at large. However, I strongly believe that any extra investment in golf is beneficial. Although it may not align with our expectations initially, time will eventually bring positive changes for everyone involved in a harmonious manner.
