Surprised? Adrian Meronk slapped with slow-play penalty in LIV Golf event that costs him more than $200K
LIV golf is not about playing slowly. That was evident in Sunday’s championship match in Jeddah, when officials handed Adrian Melonch a one-stroke penalty for taking more than two minutes to shoot. Instead of tying Jon Rahm for fifth place, Melonk placed sixth out of six entries, a difference of $240,000.
Melonk was in the same group as Rahm and Kevin Na in the final round at Royal Greens Golf and Country Club. According to LIV Golf, the group received a warning after completing eight holes that day. His ranking was poor and he was running behind the standard time set by the league. After four holes, the group fell further behind and the rules official recorded the time.
Testing will take place in Dubai courtesy of LIV Golf and DP World Tour players.
“Athletes will have 40 seconds to complete each shot, with an additional 10 seconds if they are the first in their group to make a shot,” the statement said.
According to reports, it took Mellonk two minutes to make a two-putt on the 18th hole, well beyond the legal time limit. “Melonk was immediately cautioned by the umpire and given a one-stroke penalty. With the one-stroke penalty, Melonk made four shots on the par-5 18th hole, giving him a score of 5.”
Richard Brand won his first penalty in a slow game in Spain last season. Sunday’s penalty was Melonk’s second in three years in league history.
