Revealed: Tiger Woods will NOT play the Players Championship next week

Due to missing the deadline, 15-time major winner Tiger Woods has decided NOT to participate in next week’s Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, which boasts a $25 million purse.

Due to missing the Friday 5pm ET deadline for tournament commitment, Tiger Woods will not be participating in next week’s Players Championship event.

Following his commitment to play at least one event every month in 2024 during the Hero World Challenge’s pre-tournament press conference last November, Woods had been presumed to participate in TPC Sawgrass next week. He is currently 48 years of age.

According to him, he would need to commence his work possibly from Genesis and continue until March, close to the Players.

He kept his word of participating in the Genesis Invitational scheduled for February, but had to withdraw during the second round. This was done by the 15-time major champion.

Nonetheless, the Players won’t be satisfying the criteria for March since they failed to meet Friday afternoon’s deadline of having Woods commit to their field.

It had been widely anticipated that Woods, aged 48, would participate in TPC Sawgrass next week.

On Friday evening, the organizers of the tournament disclosed the complete list of participants. Included among them were four players who had not yet confirmed their attendance: Woods along with Will Gordon, David Lingmerth and Danny Willett.

The fact that the icon is skipping the prestigious event, especially in its 50th anniversary year, is quite surprising.

Due to winning the 2019 Masters, Woods has received a five-year exemption which allows him entry into the Players tournament.

As a consequence of the pandemic-related cancellation of the 2020 tournament, he was granted an additional year’s exemption to extend his eligibility until 2025.

After the Players, golf enthusiasts can look forward to attending the Valspar Championship at Copperhead Course in Innisbrook Resort from March 21st until March 24th.

Nonetheless, the fact that Woods won’t be participating in next week’s tournament may indicate that supporters will likely have to hold out until April’s Masters event to witness the return of this iconic golfer.

Since his early exit from the Genesis last month, Woods has not participated in any Tour events.

His return to the PGA Tour at Riviera Country Club, which he had eagerly awaited for a long time, was abruptly cut short last month. He had to withdraw from the Genesis Invitational six holes into the second round due to sickness.

After experiencing symptoms similar to that of flu and commencing his second round with a fever, Woods withdrew from the Genesis tournament as confirmed by his business partner and confidant Rob McNamara.

After a one-over-par 72 round yesterday, which included a hard shank on the 18th hole at Riviera Country Club due to back spasms, he began today hovering near the cut line.

McNamara clarified that his exit from the tournament on Friday was unrelated to his back.

The golfer who won 82 times on the PGA Tour participated in the esteemed Seminole Pro-Am event held on Monday.
