Baker Mayfield, former Browns QB sends out a message, After signing a contract worth $100 million
Baker Mayfield, a previous quarterback for the Browns, has recently secured a profitable agreement with the Buccaneers.
On Sunday, Baker Mayfield – the former quarterback of Cleveland Browns – signed a profitable agreement and is now making his comeback with Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
As per multiple sources, there is an agreement between Mayfield and the Bucs for a three-year contract worth $100 million. The deal may even go up to $115 million with incentives included. This marks a significant turnaround for Mayfield after being let go by the Browns following their acquisition of Deshaun Watson.
Mayfield expressed to Adam Schefter of ESPN that he longed for the opportunity to return, as he has a fondness for Coach Bowles and his team. He feels elated about being back and is determined to achieve more success in the postseason.
During the offseason, the Bucs successfully re-signed Mike Evans – a preferred target for Mayfield. The deal agreed upon was worth $52 million over two years.
Last offseason, the Bucs inked Mayfield to a $4 million contract for one year. He had to earn the starting spot in training camp, which he did with his outstanding performance. As the former first pick of Cleveland Browns, Mayfield threw 28 touchdowns and just committed ten interceptions while passing for 4044 yards. Additionally, he scored an impressive quarterback rating of 94.6 that contributed significantly towards Tampa Bay’s successful postseason victory against Philadelphia Eagles
Baker Mayfield is expressing confusion regarding the Browns’ split.
Deshaun Watson was chosen over Baker Mayfield by the Browns.
Having been a part of the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams organizations, Mayfield went on to play for four seasons with the Browns. During his tenure in Cleveland, he accumulated 14,125 passing yards and scored 92 touchdowns while maintaining a record of 29-30.
Despite suffering a shoulder injury, Mayfield pushed through during his last season with the Browns which almost resulted in damaging consequences to his professional football career. He managed to pass for 3,010 yards and score 17 touchdowns but also threw away 13 interceptions.
After the subsequent offseason, Cleveland’s management made a huge move by trading three first-round picks to the Houston Texans for Watson. Moreover, they offered him an unparalleled contract worth $230 million with full guarantees. Nonetheless, since that trade in 2022 until now, Watson has only appeared in twelve games.
Mayfield’s departure from the Browns was not without blemish. Although he continues to harbor reservations about the experience, he has chosen not to fixate on it.
During an October interview on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Mayfield stated that towards the end of his 2021 season, despite playing with a heavily injured shoulder, he was eager to undergo surgery and recuperate so as to be able to return again in hopes of replicating his performance from 2020. However, it seems this was not meant to be according to their plans. Despite this setback though, Mayfield maintains that everything happens for a reason and remains optimistic about future opportunities.
The Browns are hopeful that Deshaun Watson will play the entire season.
Since his trade to the Browns, Deshaun Watson has only participated in 12 games.
With the Browns, Watson is approaching a crucial season. His time playing has been restricted due to injuries and an extensive suspension period. Following his shoulder surgery which ended his previous season, Watson is predicted to be fully prepared for training camp kickoff.
“Our starting quarterback has our utmost confidence and we are thrilled with the progress he’s made both on and off the field within our organization,” stated Browns GM Andrew Berry on January 22. “We eagerly anticipate his return next year as we believe he’ll have a spectacular season. We truly wish to see him play more often.”
With the Browns, Watson has thrown for 2,217 yards while scoring 14 touchdowns and throwing only 9 interceptions.
Cleveland’s quarterback depth is being addressed including Dorian Thompson-Robinson entering his second season. They plan to seek a veteran backup and Joe Flacco may be an option as he becomes a free agent after having success in Cleveland last year with 4-1 record. The former Super Bowl MVP expressed interest in signing with the Browns if no starting opportunity arises, placing them at the top of his list.
