DaQuan Jones, Bills’ Defensive Tackle, Releases Brief Statement Regarding His Future in Buffalo
In a brief statement posted early Tuesday morning, DaQuan Jones announced his return to the Buffalo Bills with news of a new contract.
“After the legal tampering period opened, Jones posted on X shortly after midnight on March 12 and exclaimed: ‘WE’RE BACK!!!!!'”
Jones was a key free agent signing for the Bills, and established himself as an essential figure on their defense during the 2023 season until he suffered a torn pectoral muscle which kept him out of action for quite some time. His comeback signifies that the Bills are obtaining a formidable presence who can contribute significantly to addressing one of their most pressing concerns- bolstering their defense.
DaQuan Jones Signs Two-Year Deal with Bills
Athlete’s First, the agency representing Jones, announced on Instagram that a fresh agreement has been reached. The contract is for two years and will see Jones earning $16 million; approximately $10.5 million of this amount is guaranteed. He’ll be returning to Buffalo as part of the deal.
Before signing Jones to a new deal, the Bills only had two defensive tackles on their roster- seasoned player Ed Oliver and Eli Ankou, who spent most of last season in the practice squad. This was highlighted by ESPN.
Before his injury last season, Jones was one of the best defensive linemen in the league. He managed to garner 2.5 sacks and three tackles for a loss across seven games. According to Pro Football Focus, Jones received an overall grade of 90.5 for the season- this made him fifth among all other defensive linemen on the list!
Retaining Jones was considered a crucial objective for the Bills during this offseason. According to The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia, if Jones were to depart in free agency, the team would lack a starter at one-technique defensive lineman position; hence it made sense for them to keep the experienced tackle on board.
According to Buscaglia, Jones offers the ideal combination of vital defensive capabilities for the Bills in 2024 at a reasonable cost. Despite being 32 and recovering from injury, his value may decrease which worked well with Buffalo’s defense scheme last year that could set him up for another payday next season. Out of all re-signing options available, Jones clearly holds superior importance for seasons ahead.
The Bills are focusing on improving their defense.
Although the Bills refrained from making any major acquisitions during the opening day of legal tampering before the commencement of a new league year, they concentrated on strengthening their defense in other aspects. A.J. Epenesa was revealed to have signed a two-year contract with them as defensive end, marking an important development for their team. Having had his career peak last season where he achieved six and half sacks equalling his personal record along with higher tackles (20), passes defended (8) and interceptions (2).
Versatile defensive back Cam Lewis was also re-signed by the team, potentially positioning himself for a more significant role in the upcoming season following safety Jordan Poyer’s departure and expected loss of fellow safety Micah Hyde.
According to the team’s official website, Lewis participated in all 17 matches during the previous season and accomplished a total of 16 tackles with two passes defended. Moreover, he showcased versatility by performing various roles in the secondary and remained an essential component of their special teams.
