Message from ex-Bills safety’s wife in 5 words following signing with rival team.
On October 26, 2023, Jordan Poyer – who used to play safety for the Bills – was present at Highmark Stadium.
Last week, the Buffalo Bills made a drastic move to their roster by letting go of numerous crucial veterans. Among them was safety Jordan Poyer whose departure proved to be an emotional farewell for dedicated fans of the team, also known as “Bills Mafia”.
Notwithstanding, Poyer’s unemployment didn’t last for a prolonged period. The news of his acquisition by the Miami Dolphins – rivals to Bills in AFC East – was announced on Tuesday 12th March by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Poyer’s move to the Dolphins is not entirely unforeseen as he has a residence in Southern Florida. Furthermore, the Bills player had received attention from Miami last year but ultimately opted to extend his contract with Buffalo.
Rachel Bush, the wife of Poyer, is delighted to witness his landing with the Dolphins. As soon as the news became public knowledge, Rachel posted a concise message on X (previously known as Twitter).
“FINS UP WE ARE HOME !! 🐬🩵,” Bush posted.
In 2023, at the age of 33 in April, Poyer accumulated a total of 100 tackles and forced one fumble. This was also his first season since recording an interception back in 2016. As Micah Hyde pondered retirement as fellow veteran safety, experts predicted that the Bills would hold on to Poyer instead – thus maintaining half of their powerful All-Pro duo.
Although he had one year remaining on his $12.5 million deal, Poyer – a Bills player since 2017 – was released by the team as part of their cost-cutting measures. This move generated savings amounting to $5.72 million against the 2024 salary cap while incurring dead money charges worth $2 million for Poyer’s contract termination fees.
Following Poyer’s release, Bush wrote a message to Bills Mafia expressing her gratitude. She shared, “Buffalo holds an abundance of memories for us that I am finding difficult to express at this time. Thank you immensely for the love and support shown over the years! We are thankful beyond measure (for all of you!) ❤️💙.”
Poyer informed NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe of his agreement with the Dolphins and expressed his excitement about going back home. He told Wolfe, “I’ve been wanting to move to Florida for quite some time now because it is located around 35 minutes from my house. It feels good as I have great respect for coach McDaniel and the team.”
Poyer’s contract details were not disclosed initially, indicating that it was likely a minor agreement. However, as reported by ESPN’s Marcel Louis-Jacques, Poyer agreed to a one-year deal valued at $2 million.
Poyer stated that while the amount in his contract is not excessive, he is satisfied. He holds a great admiration for his fellow teammates and believes that he will seamlessly integrate into Miami’s team dynamic.
On her Instagram Stories, Bush disclosed that their daughter Aliyah was also eager for him to be in Miami. A photo with the Dolphins mascot had a caption from her mentioning that “there’s only one place where Aliyah wanted signing”. Can you guess which one?
The Dolphin’s $2 million contract offer to Jordan Poyer elicited diverse responses from analysts.
In October 2021, Jordan Poyer – a safety who once played for the Bills – intercepted a pass against the Dolphins at Highmark Stadium.
There was a debate on X after Poyer only agreed to sign for the minimum amount allowed for veterans. The host of “Talking Buffalo,” Patrick Moran, commented by saying that it was essentially an uncertain contract with no guarantee of making the roster.
According to Art Stapleton of USA Today, Poyer is being challenged with the demand to “prove it” amidst doubts regarding his abilities due to turning 33 next month. In addition, there have been speculations about how much he has left in him. The presence of a talented teammate on Dolphins could offer Poyer an opportunity for showcasing his potential and demonstrate that he still possesses what it takes.
Nevertheless, Poyer could have accepted a reduced salary to stay in Florida. In the past year when he re-signed with Buffalo, he expressed his desire to reside in a state that had fewer taxes and more sunlight. Furthermore, he shares a close relationship with Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
According to Ryan Smith of Pro Football Focus, it seems evident that Poyer had a strong desire to sign with Miami given the lucrative deal he received. The combination of Holland and Poyer as safeties is an impressive one, making this an excellent acquisition for the Dolphins.
