Nate Burleson explains how Deion Sanders served as a source of inspiration for his career.
Coach Prime’s advice has deeply influenced the host of CBS Mornings.
This week, Deion Sanders embarked on a fast-paced publicity campaign for his latest book titled ‘Elevate and Dominate: 21 Ways to Win On and Off the Field’. As part of this tour, he made an appearance on CBS Mornings where he engaged in discussions with Nate Burleson, Gayle King as well Tony Dokoupil.
In his account, Burleson recounted how he once missed a flight during the early stages of his career with the NFL Network. Sanders approached him firmly and demanded that he improve himself if he wanted to contend for top positions. The warning Deion gave him was particularly striking; pointing at his own wrist as an example of skin color, Deion cautioned that there could be no room for error.
Burleson asked Coach Prime why he cared so much about other people shining, to which he replied that it was what his mother had taught him. She always made sure everyone who visited their home had a meal and place to stay. He wanted the best for Burleson too because it’s heartbreaking when we can see potential in someone but they cannot see it themselves.
As King delved into the section of Sanders’ book where he discussed having suicidal thoughts, it was clear that emotions were running high during the interview. Recall that at this point in his life, Sanders had been playing for the Cincinnati Reds while simultaneously navigating a tumultuous divorce with threats from his ex-wife to take away their children – circumstances which left him feeling quite dejected and hopeless.
Over the years, there has been a significant improvement in the Sanders family’s situation. During their book tour stop in Atlanta on Friday, Deion was accompanied by his two eldest children.
On Monday night, Sanders concludes his book tour in Boulder while the Buffs commence their spring practices on the same day.
