Former Bills QB Who Once Beat Out Josh Allen Lands Another NFL Job

A pass is thrown by Nathan Peterman while playing against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Nathan Peterman has moved on to a different team, seven years following his victory over rookie Josh Allen for the starting quarterback position at Buffalo Bills.

On March 19, it was announced by The New Orleans Saints that they had inked a one-year deal with the quarterback who is now aged 29. Peterman has spent his previous two years playing for the Chicago Bears, where he managed to feature in five games and start only once.

Peterman is now presented with an opportunity to join forces once again with quarterback Derek Carr. During their stint at the Las Vegas Raiders, Peterman was his backup and will now have a shot at competing for the same role.

Nathan Peterman is eagerly looking forward to his latest opportunity.

After experiencing a tumultuous year in Chicago, during which he was twice released within three weeks as the team played musical chairs with backup quarterbacks, the journeyman quarterback is now heading to New Orleans. Peterman expressed his enthusiasm for this new opportunity and even reached out early on to Carr – his former teammate.

Peterman expressed his excitement to reunite with him, as reported by NOLA.com.

Andrew Janocko, who served as Peterman’s quarterbacks coach in Chicago, will reunite with him once again in New Orleans.

As pointed out by NOLA.com, Peterman is in a position to compete for the second-string quarterback spot behind Carr following Winston’s departure to join the Cleveland Browns. Conversely, Jake Haener, who was unable to take part in any games during 2023 despite being selected as a fourth-round pick last year, is also anticipated to vie for this backup role.

Peterman stated that he is prepared to support Carr as a backup, provided that he can secure the position.

According to Peterman, “Our relationship has been excellent and remains so. It’s enjoyable. I’ve made every effort in the locker room as well as on game day to support him any way that I can-whether it be by aiding or simply having fun with each other. Derek is an outstanding competitor who encourages me always, thus we continue pushing one another.”

A challenging duration in Buffalo.

During his time in Buffalo, Peterman’s leadership was divisive. He secured a starting position as a rookie in 2017 when newly appointed head coach Sean McDermott benched Tyrod Taylor for their game against the then-San Diego Chargers. Sadly, Peterman threw five interceptions before halftime and was replaced by Taylor at half-time.

During the same season, despite sustaining a head injury and leaving the game early, Peterman’s touchdown pass in an intense blizzard rivalry against Indianapolis Colts was definitely noteworthy. This contributed to Buffalo Bills’ victory and helped them stay competitive for playoffs ultimately ending their dry spell of 17 years without any postseason appearances by securing a playoff spot that year.

The following season, Peterman made his way back to Buffalo and managed to snatch the starting position away from rookie Allen during training camp. However, his stint as starter didn’t endure very long in the second year. In fact, coaches yanked him out of Week 1’s game against the Baltimore Ravens after halftime when they found themselves trailing by a whopping score of 40-0. Later that same season, Peterman ended up getting released altogether.

Despite a difficult beginning to his career, Peterman kept landing chances in the NFL and ended up playing for the Las Vegas Raiders from 2020-21. He made two appearances during that tenure.
