Tiger Woods is criticized by his PGA Tour opponent, who claims to take the throne from him
John Daly came up against the great Tiger Woods on a number of occasions throughout his PGA Tour, and the pair will reunite their rivalry at the PNC Championship this week.
John Daly has revealed he once beat golfing icon Tiger Woods whilst drunk ahead of this week’s PNC Championship, where both PGA Tour stalwarts will compete alongside their sons.
The pair will reunite their former rivalry at the family-based tournament in Florida this weekend.
With Woods partnering son Charlie and Daly with son John Jr. Woods and Daly played out many a battle during the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.
But one in particular appears to stick out from the rest.
Speaking an interview with Tucker Carlson this week, Daly was quizzed on when he took on the 82-time PGA Tour winner whilst being hungover.
But the American was then quick to correct his interviewer.
Daly pointed out that he was in fact drunk rather than nursing a hangover, and went on to beat arguably golf’s greatest ever player. When recalling the event, the two-time major champion’s memory was a little foggy, claiming the drunken clash came in the early 2000’s when it in fact took place in 1994.
“That was at Sherwood, early 2000’s (he later clarified that it was 1994), there was only about 12 or 14 pros, but we didn’t play too good.” We had the roundtable at Sherwood and I had my bottle of Jack Daniels then. I just meet these guys, right?”
“Tiger came in and I said ‘T, come have a drink with us man’. And he said ‘no, I’m going to go hit some balls’. A few hours later, I said again, ‘come have a drink with us.’ Tiger said, ‘no, I’m going to go work out’.” This is going on for about five or six hours and we’re still there just pounding, getting drunk, having a good time. I got a sponsorship out of it which I was happy about.”
Whilst Daly was out enjoying a drink, Woods was gearing himself up for the next day of play, but come the 18th green less than 24 hours later it was a booze-fuelled Daly who came out on top. “So [the next morning] we tee off, my caddie was drunk with us,” he went on.
“The funny thing about Tiger is, when I got on the tee, I had my caddie bring me a crown or a jack and coke, if you’ve never played Sherwood, the first hole, he’s walking and walking through all the cactuses on this hill trying not to spill my drink.”
“I grab my three iron and go on the tee. To make a long story short, I shoot like 65 he shoots like 71, he was shaking his head all day.” Daly went on to reveal that there had been two occasions in his career where he had opted to enjoy a drink or two whilst competing on the PGA Tour.
He revealed that when competing at the annual Tour event at Riviera he finished ‘four or five’ beers whilst out on the course before going on to finish third. I had a few Coors Lights, we had a long wait to play the back nine at Riviera,” he added. “I downed four or five Coors Lights; I was playing like s***. There’s like four groups waiting to tee off on the front, I downed those, shot four-under or five-under on that side and make the cut, think I ended up finishing third.”
