Confirmation from Shooter McGavin: The script for ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ has been written.
Recently, Adam Sandler has been venturing outside his typical roles by taking more audacious and unconventional parts. Throughout the past few years, he’s portrayed various characters such as Howard Ratner in the intense film “Uncut Gems,” Stanley Sugarman in the basketball-based drama titled “Hustle,” and Jakub Procházka in the science-fiction thriller named “Spaceman.” He is even set to star alongside George Clooney and Laura Dern for Noah Baumbach’s forthcoming coming-of-age feature.
Despite everything mentioned, Sandler’s fundamental passion lies in producing hilarious comedies featuring himself and his buddies. Therefore, it is very likely that we could expect a new edition of “Happy Gilmore” in the near future.
During his appearance on Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan, Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in the film, expressed that he had recently caught up with Adam Sandler and had a glimpse of an early version of the eagerly awaited sequel. As someone who has always been vocal about their admiration for this golf movie classic from 1996, McDonald seems thrilled at the prospect of reprising his infamous antagonist character once again.
McDonald recounted that he had run into Adam Sandler roughly two weeks earlier, when the comedian proudly unveiled a surprise: “You’re gonna love this,” he told McDonald. Perplexed, McDonald asked what it was; in response, Sandler showed him an early draft of “Happy Gilmore 2.” Though uncertain if sharing this information would paint him as dishonest during his show (so perhaps omitting it would be wise), McDonald confirmed that seeing the script certainly piqued his interest. After all, with fans clamoring for more content from the original movie’s universe – who knows? It may just come to fruition after all!
Although the initial release of the film garnered almost $40 million in revenue, its popularity skyrocketed as a cult classic and home video sensation. Today, nearly three decades later, Happy Gilmore remains an iconic name associated with golf. It’s baffling that no sequel has been produced until now.
Sadly, the recent passing of Bob Barker and Carl Weathers means they won’t be appearing in the sequel. Their portrayals of iconic characters – Barker’s exaggerated persona and Chubbs’ mentorship – have become an integral part of our enduring love for “Happy Gilmore”. However, Adam Sandler is sure to pay homage to both legends in his upcoming film.
It remains uncertain whether Will Zalatoris will make a guest appearance as Gilmore’s nearly identical caddie or if the plot of LIV Golf saga will be incorporated into the movie. However, it almost seems effortless for Shooter McGavin to gain influence by creating an opposing league that troubles Gilmore. Regardless, we eagerly anticipate Adam Sandler’s creation and look forward to adding new phrases and quotes onto our golf vocabulary.
