Tiger Woods Gets No Support From Steve Williams in His Fight Against LIV Golf
Steve Williams, who was once employed by the most renowned Tiger Woods, believes that LIV Golf has a promising future. During an interview with Kiwi radio host Dom Harvey, the ex-caddie of world No.1 golfer opined that the emerging league offers additional alternatives for spectators to enjoy golf events. Williams had been ascribed to all 72 PGA Tour triumphs and 13 Major titles earned by his previous employer before he received a harsh dismissal over telephone communication without any formal farewell ceremony from him.
Williams’ early years included caddying for CEO of LIV Golf, Greg Norman. However, his admiration for the company is not due to any loyalty towards his Australian employer. Rather, he firmly believes that LIV Golf played a crucial role in disrupting the game’s traditional norms.
Tiger Woods’ views are not agreed upon by Steve Williams.
Controversy has surrounded the breakaway side since its beginning due to its 54-hole no-cut format, frequent shotgun starts, and excessive amounts of money given to players. This unique concept has frustrated many traditional golf enthusiasts. A Kiwi caddie commented on the situation saying that there have been numerous disputes over this unprecedented approach with tremendous payouts for athletes involved in it. Jon Rahm became a part of this controversy after allegedly switching sides for $500 million dollars.
Rahm will not receive any world-ranking points because the OWGR does not acknowledge the PIF-funded side for their unique approach. Interestingly, Joaquin Niemann’s impressive playoff win at Mayakoba resulted in a drop from 66th to 74th place in the World Ranking. Williams remarked that this occurred as players who have switched to LIV Tour do not qualify for ranking points and their rankings decrease accordingly.
The experienced caddie expressed his belief that the Greg Norman-led league, known as “Golf but louder,” would ultimately benefit the sport. He noted that it offers a unique playing field and atmosphere for tournaments while giving fans another option to enjoy golf in an exciting setting. LIV Golf has already strengthened their roster with two recent Major winners, resulting in even more enthusiasm from attendees at each event. However, Williams’ view contrasts significantly with what Woods has stated previously about such leagues.
The 15-time Major champion has expressed his disapproval of LIV Golf, considering it to be confusing since its inception. During the announcement of TGL – an indoor golf tournament initiated by RoryMcIlroy and himself – he stated: “Some aspects I witnessed with LIV … were incomprehensible.” Furthermore, Woods had reservations about allowing previous LIV golfers to return without consequences as per insider information obtained by Golf Digest.
