Exclusive; Bills Named Top Fit for $57.5 Million WR After Release by Cowboys
Michael Gallup Identified as Best Fitting Addition to Bills’ Roster Among Former Dallas Cowboys Wide Receivers.
There is a possibility that the Cowboys may utilize WR Michael Gallup as their slot player.
The Buffalo Bills have a task on their hands rebuilding their receiving corps following the trade of their primary wide receiver and departure of to free agency for their second-best.
According to a writer, the Bills may target a former Dallas Cowboys receiver in free agency post this month’s NFL draft, as suggested by their general manager Brandon Beane.
Matt Holder of Bleacher Report suggested that the Buffalo Bills consider veteran Michael Gallup as a potential free agent acquisition following his release from the Dallas Cowboys in March.
Michael Gallup Could Compete for Starting Job
Holder emphasized that Gallup was not being brought to Buffalo as a replacement for Stefon Diggs, who had previously held the position of top receiver on the team for four consecutive seasons prior to his unexpected trade to the Houston Texans.
According to Holder, securing Gallup’s services may assist the Bills in obtaining a dependable receiver.
In the April 7 article, it was stated that following the Stefon Diggs trade, the Bills are in need of assistance at wide receiver. Though he can’t fully fill Diggs’ role within their offense, acquiring Gallup would allow Buffalo to better equip Josh Allen with a variety of weapons in order to match his production as a four-time Pro Bowler.
According to Holder, the Bills will consider Gallup, aged 28 as a potential starter. Prior to this opportunity, he was selected by the Cowboys in round three of 2018 and had an exceptional performance during his breakout season in 2019 with six touchdowns over 66 catches that totalled up to 1,107 yards. Unfortunately after tearing his ACL back in 2021, his productivity saw lower output levels for two consecutive seasons. Despite being tied into a 5-year, $57.5million contract deal with the Cowboys, Gallup was eventually released from their roster in March.
A potential outcome for the Bills’ first-round selection is choosing a wide receiver.
The Bills are expected to address their receiving corps before the draft as they saw No. 2 receiver Gabe Davis depart for Jacksonville in free agency, according to several writers.
Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic proposed that Beane may opt to make a move up the first round by acquiring the No. 7 overall pick in order to secure LSU receiver Malik Nabers.
In his statement on April 5th, Buscaglia asserted that the Bills may potentially make a bold move like trading during draft day. He noted how their general manager, Brandon Beane, has historically been an assertive trader when it comes to prospects who align with their system. Since there is currently a critical need for a top receiver and considering where they stand in their progression as a team, this type of decision could be rationalized by Beane as one that propels them towards prolonged success.
According to Buscaglia, Nabers possess exceptional skills and could be one of the most talented wide receivers in the draft. He is likely to fill Diggs’ vacant spot effectively, providing immediate help for The Bills.
Buscaglia noted that Josh Allen, the Bills’ outstanding quarterback, is supported by a talented roster and predicted they would be playoff contenders in 2024. He suggested that adding a young receiver with exceptional abilities on an affordable rookie contract could provide Buffalo with significant financial flexibility throughout this player’s four-year deal.
