Lanny Wadkins calls Phil Mickelson ‘The Most Disappointing Person’ in Golf
Golf Today host Eamonn Lynch spoke about recent allegations from Las Vegas gambler Billy Walters, who claims Mickelson was trying to bet on his 2012 Ryder Cup team. Although “Southpaw” denied betting on golf’s biggest tournament, rumors began to surface regarding Mickelson’s betting habits. Wadokins seems to be a big fan of Phil Michelson. Golf veterans did not discuss Mikelson’s actions inside and outside the course. Wadkins made it clear to Lynch what he thought about LIV Golfer and his actions over the past few years.
What did Wadkins say about Mickelson? When asked about the gambling allegations, Wadkins, the 1977 PGA Championship winner, told Lynch exactly what he thought about “Southpaw.”
“I don’t know if there’s ever been a more disappointing person in golf than Phil Mickelson,” he said. “He has been a popular player for a long time and we were all impressed with the way he played. But nothing he’s been doing lately seems healthy. ”
Wadkins was referring to Mickelson’s decision to leave the PGA for the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour and his gambling problems. “He missed the chance to be captain in the Ryder Cup,” Watkins said. “I think he probably would have been captain twice. Now he won’t be part of this. It is really a pity. It exploded on its own. He seems to keep doing it every step of the way. It’s unfortunate and sad. It’s sad that there are people in our game who think they’re bigger than the game itself. And obviously Phil thinks he’s more than that.”
Now they have to sit and wait for Mickelson to respond to Wadkins. “The Lefty” has been very open about his decision to quit the PGA, and did not deny that he has bet heavily on sporting events over the years. It will be interesting to see how Mickelson and the golf world respond to Wadkins’ criticism. Mickelson had a tough week on and off the course. Eamonn Lynch also revealed his feelings towards the LIV golfer in a column for USA Today this weekend.
