Bengals choose OT Amarius Mims Two Spots Ahead Of Steelers
Georgia OT Amarius Mims, who has been considered one of the top prospects throughout the pre-draft process and was previously linked to the Pittsburgh Steelers, has been chosen by AFC North rivals Cincinnati Bengals with their 18th overall selection – two picks before he would have landed on Pittsburgh.
With just eight college games under his belt, Mims’ main worry was his lack of experience. He got the chance to start two matches during Georgia’s 2022 championship triumph and looked forward to leading their season in 2023. Unfortunately, a high ankle sprain led him to undergo tightrope surgery which meant that he only started six times; sometimes coming off the bench or rotating as tackle when required. Overall, Mims played less than 900 collegiate snaps but was confident owing to daily practice with some top talent faces on field despite concerns over insufficient playtime in recent seasons.
With his long arms and impressive footwork for someone of his size, he possesses an advantageous length when it comes to pass protection by effectively closing off defensive edges. Our scouting report also commended him for being able to work with independent hands in this regard – a skill that OL Coach Pat Meyer emphasizes during training sessions. Additionally, provided that he remains injury-free, he exhibits smooth movement while operating within open areas.
Washington OL Troy Fautanu is the next available option after several top tackles have been drafted, though he may be better suited as a guard. Pittsburgh’s chances of acquiring a first-round right tackle are diminishing with Mims, Taliese Fuaga, and JC Latham already chosen by other teams. Oklahoma OT Tyler Guyton had previously visited with the Steelers and could also be considered for this position.
Considering that most of the draft has focused on selecting offensive players, there is still a vast pool of talented individuals yet to be picked. Since no corners have been selected so far, the team can opt for some terrific options like Terrion Arnold or Quinyon Mitchell among other CB1 prospects they may have shortlisted.
Due to the limited availability of accomplished right tackles, Broderick Jones may need to remain in his current position as a starting option at the beginning of the season.
