After trading up in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills finally made their pick. The Bills selected former Florida State wide receiver Keon Coleman with the 33rd overall pick on Day 2.
The Bills needed a new X-receiver after trading Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans. Allen never said anything bad about Diggs, but the Bills spent more than $31 million in dead money to part ways with the veteran so quickly. If the Bills were to invest in a new No. 1 receiver, Bills general manager Brandon Beane wanted to make sure he had a good relationship with Allen first.

Coleman’s selection makes him the Bills’ first top receiver since 2014, when they selected Sammy Watkins. Speaking to reporters on Friday, April 26, Beane called the 20-year-old “still an emerging talent.”

In a preliminary interview, Coleman was asked which quarterback he would like to score a touchdown from. He called Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes “the greatest player in the game right now,” but then mentioned Allen’s name without being asked. “Josh Allen, for sure. He can throw the ball. Hmm!
“It was a great interview,” Coleman told reporters in Indianapolis about his meeting with the Bills. He confidently stated that Allen “needed” him. “(Allen) probably has the strongest arm in the league,” Coleman said. “He needs guys to test that arm so he can throw it as far as he can and I can go out there and take it.”
“Today, my dream came true,” Coleman said after making the selection. “I’m ready to be Buffalo Bill and get to work.”

After one year as a starter at FSU, Coleman had 50 receptions for 658 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also returned 25 punts for 300 yards. He can make explosive plays but has issues with consistency and separation.
Ahead of the combine, Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus suggested: “Ultimately, Coleman is going to be a dangerous player — it’s not a squeaky clean profile — but his positives are clear from the tape… There are some dangers to his rating. There’s a signal.” As a result, he will be on the radar of draft analysts and NFL teams around the world. ”
The Athletic’s Nate Brugler rates Coleman as the seventh-best receiver in the draft, three spots ahead of Xavier Worthy, whom the Chiefs selected with the 28th pick after being traded to Buffalo on day one. “Overall, Coleman needs to develop more nuance in his routes, but his excellent contraction, strength and adaptability to get the ball back could make a difference,” Brugler suggested. “With continued development, he has the talent to be an NFL starter (somewhat similar to Courtland Sutton).”
But NBC Sports analyst Chris Sims believes the rewards outweigh the risks. “@BuffaloBills just made one of the strangest picks in the NFL Draft,” Sims wrote. “Keion Coleman has incredible route running ability. He’s dangerous with the ball in his hands. And with his size and jumping ability, he has a 50/50 chance of being the best kicker in the NFL.
