Buffalo Received Mixed Grades on Drafting DT DeWayne Carter
According to Nate Brugler of The Athletic, Carter was ranked as the twelfth top defensive tackle in the draft for this year. In his previous season, he acquired 41 total tackles along with 4 passes defensed and had made one sack which weighed up to a fumble recovery touchdown at an impressive height and weight of six feet two inches and three hundred two pounds respectively.
According to Brugler, Carter played as a defensive tackle in the three-technique position for former head coach Mike Elko’s 4-2-5 base scheme during his three-year stint at Duke. He also saw some opportunities on the edge. Despite experiencing a drop-off in performance during his final year, he still became Blue Devils’ first-ever triple-team captain – having displayed remarkable productivity during his sophomore and junior seasons as captured by film footage.
In his junior year, he recorded 36 tackles in total along with 4 passes defensed, nabbing 5.5 sacks and recovering from three fumbles whilst also forcing another trio of turnovers leading to a touchdown. During the previous season as a sophomore player, he accumulated stats such as recording for himself an impressive amount of forced fumbles at four while managing to get on record instead only achieving Registering fewer totals which include merely capturing just thirty-six overall tackles alongside three passed defenses captured plus obtaining up high for roughly about three and a half accomplished sacks scored during this time frame too.
Brugler concluded that while Carter doesn’t possess a distinct, game-changing quality on the field, he does exhibit intelligence, strength and remarkable vigor. As such, although he may never secure a permanent starting position in odd or even fronts as either a rotational three-technique or five-technique player respectively – he can still provide phenomenal value to any team fortunate enough to have him.
Matt Verderame, from SI, gave an “A” to the Bills for choosing Carter. He mentioned that finding Carter in the latter part of round three is a good catch and he also believes that he will complement Ed Oliver very well in future years. Furthermore, his ability to apply pressure on opponents makes him a formidable player.
Carter received a grade of “C” from Brent Sobleski at Bleacher Report. Despite being sturdy and dynamic, he should hone his skills to break free from defensive maneuvers on a regular basis.
DeWayne Carter Called Playing for the Bills ‘A Fever Dream’
“He displays a level of maturity that exceeds his age,” Beane remarked. “He inquired politely about why we took so long to reach out to him and did it graciously. When I explained our reasoning, he accepted the answer.”
Carter expressed his disbelief and enthusiasm to reporters on April 27, calling the experience “a fever dream.” He described the facilities as unreal and was in awe of seeing his name on a jersey for the first time. The moment felt surreal to him.
As he moves into the NFL, Carter acknowledges that nothing will be given to him on a silver platter. “To succeed,” he says, “you have to immerse yourself in the game and work tirelessly to carve out your own niche – this is especially true at this level.”
