Exclusive; Bills GM Reveals Rookie Draft Pick’s Surprising Question on Phone Call
DeWayne Carter is prepared to become a part of the Buffalo Bills.
When the Bills selected him in the third round of NFL Draft on April 26, he couldn’t contain his excitement after receiving a call from general manager Brandon Beane informing him about his upcoming move to Buffalo. The player had previously played as a defensive tackle for Duke University.
On X, WIVB sports director Josh Reed observed that Carter had a crucial inquiry for Beane. Reed underscored the fact that the question was posed politely.
Carter asked, “What took so long to call me?”
It is anticipated that the Duke athlete will arrive in Buffalo.
Buffalo had their eyes on Carter for quite some time and even met with him during the NFL Combine. Syracuse.com journalist, Matt Parrino, reported that after that first encounter, the Duke defensive tackle sensed he would be chosen by Buffalo.
According to Parrino’s report on X, DeWayne Carter, the new defensive tackle for Bills expressed that he had a gut feeling about ending up with his current team. He fondly recollected how he first bonded with Marcus West, their newly appointed d-line coach during the combine while discussing football strategies and techniques.
Beane shared some commendation for Carter’s leadership abilities, and the Bills were also impressed. Carter had been a captain at Duke for three years while earning Academic All-ACC recognition.
According to Beane, Carter has the potential to immediately make a positive difference on the team.
“He’ll be plug-and-play ready in my head,” stated Beane. “Not only is he intelligent, but also capable of enhancing the performance of his teammates.”
“We are extremely enthusiastic about the contribution he will make to our defensive line. This player demonstrates a fierce work ethic, an unwavering drive and possesses many of the essential traits that we seek in our players.”
The analyst views DeWayne Carter as a player who will be used in rotation with the team.
According to Lance Zierlein, a Draft Analyst for NFL Network, Carter may not have the potential to become an NFL starter but can serve as a valuable rotational player. This attribute could make him an ideal match for Buffalo’s team coached by Sean McDermott who favors rotating defensive linemen frequently.
According to Zierlein, he displays intelligence, strength and is highly active. Although unlikely to start consistently, he can contribute substantially as a rotational player in the three-technique or five-technique positions in even fronts. In terms of pass rushing abilities versus defending against runs on the professional level; while not outstanding at rush production overall, his bull rush technique and lateral quickness could lend themselves well towards better skills at pass-rushing specifically. Carter has potential as an effective addition to a 4-3 team’s rotation strategy.
During the offseason, the Bills took action in shoring up their defensive line by extending a two-year contract to free agent DaQuan Jones. He expressed enthusiasm about rejoining and had faith in the strength of this position on defense.
Jones expressed that ultimately, it boiled down to feeling at ease within the scheme. He spoke highly of Coach Sean McDermott’s defensive coaching approach and how it allows them to aggressively attack from up front. Additionally, Jones treasures the camaraderie he shares with his fellow D-line roommates who hold a special place in his heart.
After his impressive breakout season, which included 6.5 sacks and two interceptions (one of which resulted in a touchdown), defensive end A.J. Epenesa was also brought back onto the Bills roster through re-signing.
