KOEPKA KEEPING AN EYE ON PGA CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER OPENING 66 IN LIV GOLF SINGAPORE
SENTOSA, SINGAPORE – American Brooks Koepka finished the first round of LIV Golf Singapore on Friday just one back of the leader Sebastian Muñoz after a five under par 66 on the Serapong course at Sentosa Golf Club.
Beginning on hole three, Koepka reeled off five birdies in his first seven holes. His only bogey came on hole sixteen before birdieing the par-5 18th. The Smash GC skipper is tied for second with five others.
“I made some putts today,” said the former world number one,” a welcome development after recent flat-stick woes.
“I definitely could have made more but it was nice to see some go in.”
Koepka is no doubt gunning for a win this week in the city-state but in the post-round press conference he mentioned the upcoming PGA Championship twice. It’s being held in Louisville Kentucky in two weeks and he is the defending champion.
“I’m playing good, I need to keep the ball-striking going well, since this is kind of the last prep before we get to the PGA (Championship), so I’m just trying to make sure everything is in order,” added the three-time PGA champ.
Koepka has long been known as a golfer laser-focused on winning majors, as he has already collected five.
The weather was oppressively hot for much of the day but Koepka didn’t seem to be bothered, and even mentioned that he would not be changing his post-round workout because of the heat.
What Koepka needs to heat up is his golf, and a win this week would give him a massive boost of confidence leading up to his title defense in Valhalla starting May 16.
“I’m not trying to peak this week, not trying to peak next week. It’s the week after.”
